I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Writer's Hang

Yesterday I went up to my office to see if I had a check waiting for me and to just see if the building was open. I didnt have a check but the building was open, thats good because Im tutoring there next week. While I was there I of course made some long distance calls. First I called Carey and got my daily dose of abuse J I called Stacey but she wasnt home. I said hi to her mother but I didnt really talk to her. I should have. There are things we really need to discuss.

I then had some time to kill before I had to leave to go see The Kennedys. I actually spent the time constructively, I started going through an HTML tutorial atW3Schools.com. Lauren had recommended the site to me. Im going to try and go through the entire tutorial and continue through the advanced lessons and eventually learn java script. Well see if I can do it. Youll find some gratuitous use of HTML while Im learning. For instance if you go back and hold your cursor over where it says HTML youll find out what HTML stands for. I also made the links at the top of the page buttons. Im not sure if Im going to keep that.

I have an HTML book and I thought Id like that better but I actually went through the online tutorial. I did print out some of the references, like a list of all the tags.

I was worried about how Id spend my time but I got so into the tutorial I stayed too late and had to rush off to the concert. The Kennedys were playing at The Writers Hang in Hoboken. Its a wonderful concert series. Two acts join the host, Scott E. Moore, in a song circle. In addition to the Kennedys Eric Brace from Last Train Home was on the bill. A pedal steel guitarist accompanied all of them. They would each play songs in turn often discussing the writing process, each others songs, or just telling stories. The highlight of the storytelling was when Maura told us that Pete said, I was an alter boy; good thing I was ugly.

The Kennedys did mainly brand new songs from their forthcoming album. I love to hear new songs. When it came down to the last song Maura said that there were going to do a new song but an old when would fit in better. In my best jaded concertgoer manner, I was disappointed, I said to myself I bet they are going to play Life is Large. Sure enough next thing I heard was the guitar intro but instead of being disappointed I had a wave of good feeling run through me. They have me trained like Pavlovs dogs.

Eric Brace was great. Hes a DC area musician, if you live down there check out his band, Last Train Home. He combines bluegrass, Appalachian ballads, alt country, and folk. The bands lineup is constantly changing and can have as many as 13 people in it. Id love to see them at FRFF. He explained why the DC area has such a vibrant folk scene. It goes back to when they built the Pentagon. Huge numbers of workers came from all over the south and a good many of them were musicians. That led to a blending of musical cultures and styles that continues to this day. He also recounted the history of Krispy Kreme, hes a renaissance man.

My timing was perfect, I arrived at the venue just as the started to let people in. I got a good seat on a nice comfy couch. The only bad part is that I ended up having my view of Maura blocked by the pole holding a speaker. After sitting there for a few minutes I saw someone at the bar wave at me. It was Julianne Welby, one of the hosts of City Folk Morning, on WFUV. I went over to talk to her and her friend Greg. I was feeling lonely and that was just what I needed. Its nice being able to talk to people from FUV away from the station. Things are a lot more relaxed. Her responsibility on the show is the news but she has a real passion for music. They were raving to me about the Austin City Limits Festival they went to in September. Id love to go some time.

After the show I talked to Pete and Maura. I tried to convince Pete to play the mandolin at shows. I tried to talk Dave Matheson into that too. I think every band should feature a mandolin, a steel guitar, a therimon, and a didgeridoo.
