I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

More Museum Pieces

Not much new happened at the hospital yesterday. Once again my mother pretty much slept the entire time I was there. The doctor called today and the infection seems to be under control and he'd like to get her out of the hospital and into rehab. We don't know when that is going to happen yet. She still has so many other issues she doesn't eat and she sleeps all day. The doctor thinks these are related to her dementia not physical causes.

Last night I went to dinner then played bridge with Roy. He is good for my tummy, the two best days for my digestive health have been the days I ate with him. I ate more last night than I have in ages with no ill effects.

The bridge was successful too. In a strong game we came in fourth out of ten and first in Strat B. We've scored twice in a row now.

Oh yes, Roy's daughter is getting married in September 2007. Don't let me forget it. I missed her sister's Bat Mitzvah because I had the date wrong by one week.

I finally have all my Museum of Natural History photos up.

First I just noticed that there was a problem loading the Blue Whale photo I used yesterday so here is another one.

The Museum has movie references; here's Jaws.

It has Moxy Früvous references: Here's Dave Matheson

It has Gay Penguin References. The Gay Penguin Bathhouse.

It helps my self-esteem. See my nose isn't that big.

Neither is my mouth:

The museum needs my help. They think this is an Aztec Sun Stone but anyone with a passing acquaintance with exo-archeology would recognize this as a capstone for a Stargate (Chappa'i).

Till recently there was a separate admission to the Rose Center, the space science museum. Now you only have to pay for the sky show at the planetarium.

Look, I didn't find these pictures online; I was really there.

Who wants to write the fic that this pic is illustrating?

It is a museum of Natural History but it has many manmade artifacts like this Easter Island Head.

Which inspired me to get two lovely European women to take this picture of me.

This should have been in yesterday's entry. The Barosaurus in the Theodore Roosevelt Hall by the main entrance.

Roosevelt had a huge influence on the museum and much of the museum is dedicated to him. There is a statue of him out front.

Here is a political cartoon about him.

Look how Republicans have changed. This is what TR had to say about Nature.

They realized that one of the museum's assets is its location and put in windows so you can see the view.

We don't waste land in the city. This slip and slide is on the museum grounds right outside the Rose Center.

Once again time snuck up on me and I have to run. Perhaps more pictures tomorrow.

I just got a call from the hospital. My mother is coming out tomorrow!
