I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Intended Editions

In Beyond Life the preface to the 18 volume Biography of Manuel Cabell talks about John Charteris's library of intended editions. A book when written never actually matches the author's intentions. The words are never exactly right. The library of intended editions contains those platonic ideal versions of the books.

What is true of book is true of diary entries too. Today I basically vegged out so I'm going to go back and correct some things in the last few diaries.

Let's start with yesterday. I wrote about the Israeli Elections and I think I might have made it seem like I was putting all the blame on the Israeli Government. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sharon's election is what triggered my writing but my whole point is that it's not one side's fault. In fact before the election it is the intransigence of Arafat that has been the biggest stumbling block. The Israeli Government was willing to give up almost every point for peace but Arafat was not willing to compromise at all. I did feel that he would eventually give in though. Now things are harder. But just as I feel that Arafat can be dealt with despite his terrorist history the Arabs should feel that Sharon can be dealt with despite his history.

Now in true Gordon fashion I can't remember my corrections of the earlier entries. Oh well, I think if you just insert more good things about Carey that will get the point across. Life would be so much easier with a working brain.

Just as books have intended editions so do our lives. In my intended edition my life is quite different. I have my Phd. I'm a professor of Math or Physics. I'm married. I have kids; and so much more. No one lives the life they planned. I wish mine were a bit closer though. Now I'm really happy now. This is a great month. I can still see what's missing though. I have dreams sometimes that everything since some point in my life is a dream and that when I wake up I'll get it right. Then there are the times I just await the mother ship. When it comes it will take me and the other usz back to our own planet, a place where things make sense, a place where my friends and I can be happy. I have a question for my readers. Do you ever wait for the mother ship? Would you hop on it if you could? If you do or have some equivalent metaphor email me. I'd love to hear about it.
