I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

The Day The Music Died

I had today's entry all planned out. It has a theme and even cohesion but there is some late breaking news that demands to be told. As you should know I'm a Solomaniac, an ordained minister in the Church of Lawrence of Früvous. Lawrence displayed his divinity today. He secured the domain name Batnose.com . Batnose has a home now.

Leah's diary page was a deconstruction of mine. You really have to check this out, of course once you do you won't really have to read mine. Hers is a Template for Wise Madness. Now remember writing Wise Madness is not as easy as it looks. All the stunts are done by trained professionals. Do Not Try This At Home

By 12 minutes its still February 3 do you know what this is the Anniversary of? It's "the day the music died," when Buddy Holly's plane crashed. So enough of my personal life, the rest of this column is dedicated to some true originals; Buddy of course: Can you guess what I'm listening to? First American Pie, then Buddy's greatest hits. Buddy was so far ahead of his time. He really was the vanguard of the Sixty's Singer/Songwriters. When he died his music was moving to places that no one had been to before. He was a true precursor of the Beatles and Dylan. Pete Fornatale played a set dedicated to Buddy Holly. One thing really got me. It was a live show by Phil Ochs from 1970. When Phil said he was going to play some Buddy Holly people booed. They wanted to hear his protest songs and that's it. He explained what a big influence Buddy was on him but they didn't care. The world wants to put you in a box and not let you out.

Tonight I went to see David Johansen at the Bottom Line. For those of you who don't know him he's the man behind Buster Poindexter but he is so much more than that. He first rose to fame as the leader of the New York Dolls one of the seminal Glam Rock Roots. They'd rock while wearing dresses. Bowie was pretty tame compared to the Dolls. After the Dolls broke up David went Solo and started doing Buster Poindexter. David has found a way out of the box. When he wants to explore a different Genre of Music he just starts a new band or in Buster's case a whole new Persona. The incarnation I saw tonight was The Harry Smiths. They play traditional folk and blues. David's tastes are nothing if not eclectic. Harry Smith was an archivist who collected the songs on the most influential album of all time The Anthology of American Folk Music Everyone but everyone has been influenced by it either directly or indirectly. Right now David is performing in three different modes: Buster, David Johansen, and the Harry Smiths. Needless to say the show was great. He even covered a Dolls' song. David is one of those people who are automatically cool.

Finally, tonight marked the return of Vin Scelsa to the radio. He is on WFUV on Saturday nights from 8:00 PM till Midnight. You can listen every week online. Follow the link and give it a try. If you are serious about music give yourself a treat. Soon the shows will be archived and you'll be able to listen at your convenience. I won't write about Vin again as I all ready devoted an entry to him. You can read it now if you want. Vin Entry . Welcome back Vin.

In case you missed it I had an extra entry this morning Anhedonia
