I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Lead us not into Penn Station

I really can't be late to class even when I try. I left the house much later than usual today and still caught my train with no trouble. It was just a matter of finding parking fast.

When class started half the class was missing. Most of them showed up late. Their test corrections were due today and I think that might have been the reason. People wait till the last minute to do them then rush through it. I wish they cared half as much as I do about how they do in the class.

One of my students missed the test last week and today brought me a doctor's note. It said that he sprained his ankle. He was walking with no trouble whatsoever. He wouldn't let me keep the note but I made a copy of it. Do you think I should call the doctor to verify that he really couldn't make the test? I'd really appreciate it if you let me know what you think.

After school I did a bit of shopping for my Beloved Brain. I get to see her on Thursday. I'm going to be a bad boy and end class early so I'll have more time with her.

After shopping I tutored Hilary, Roy's daughter for the SATs. I wish my students were more like her. She's a lot of fun. She even likes Ruth Gerson.

Then it was back to the City for the Knick game. I really live my life on the run sometimes. I grabbed something to eat at Penn Station before the game. I only ate on the run today. I didn't sit down at all.

The Knicks won and so did I. I'm now down 11-12 to Alan. I can tie it all up next game. This has the makings of a classic comeback.

I think I'm going to cut this short. I have to grade the test corrections and watch Bring it On before Tuesday morning. I'm sure I'll remember what I really wanted to write about in the middle of the night.
