I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

With Gilligan, the Skipper too...

I didn't update yesterday. I haven't missed a day that I was at home for a while. I've been tired lately. I hope I can catch up on my sleep tonight.

OK so where was I? My father seemed to be really helped by the dialysis. He has been able to eat the last few days. He is going for his second treatment tonight. I think they really found what was wrong with him. Now it will only be a matter of regaining his strength.

One of my father's roommates died last night. I have spent a lot of times in hospitals but that has never happened to me. I guess I've been lucky.

Something interesting happened in class today. One student asked where something came from. It was something he should not have needed to ask. We had done so many similar problems and it is something I impressed on them was very important that they learn. What was interesting was that some other students got annoyed that he didn't know it. It really has become second nature to them. It made me very happy that at least some of my students have put in lots of effort.

Tonight I saw The Professor and Maryann for the first time since last February. They are one of my favorite local musical acts. Ken Rockwood, the Professor is really a math/computer professor at the Stevens Institute. Maryann's real name is Danielle Brancaccio; she either works at or owns a beauty salon in Staten Island. He writes the songs and plays the guitar, mandolin, and ukulele. She sings. His writing is filled with irony and loneliness. Her voice captures the feeling perfectly. Last time I saw them was at the release party for their newest album. When I added tonight's show to my database I was upset because I realized I didn't add the last time I saw them. I am really anal aren't I? I am going to email them and find out the venue and the date if possible. Good thing they know I'm nuts.

Tomorrow is the WFUV party, I never go to parties. I hope I have a good time. It would be easier if I had a date of course. Lots of things would be easier if I had a date. I'm still looking forward to it though. The timing couldn't be worse though. It is the same night that DVN is playing in New York for the first time since I've been healthy. It is also the night that Dave's True Story is giving their first performance since Kelly gave birth. To complete the trifecta, Dr Didg is also playing that night. I've never seen him but I love the one album I have of his. It's hard not to love a didgeridoo player.

I'll leave you with a question: Which are more evil: mimes or Andean pipe players?
