I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

My Pal Pal

I'm probably too tired to do justice to this entry but by tomorrow I'll have forgotten too much, it's always a tradeoff.

The day started off with my hearing about an injustice being done, Carey didn't get the job she wanted at Brookes. The world would be much better if they let me make all the important decisions.

I had to get to school early today because on Thursdays I have office hours. I'm giving a test on Monday so I thought someone might actually show up. No one did. That did give me more time to talk to Carey and Leah. . While playing online then I found a page about Freedomland, one of my favorite early childhood memories. Pete Kennedy remembers it fondly too.

Class went off OK though we didn't get to review as much for the test as I wanted. I hope they do well. I'm going to have a busy weekend making it up. I haven't made up a calculus test in years. I'll have to start from scratch. I'd rather make it too easy and too short than too long or too hard.

I raced home from school to see my father in the hospital. He was sleeping most of the time but I got to talk to my sister Alison for a bit. They are talking about moving my father back to Parker Rehab but I'd rather he stayed in LIJ till they find out what is wrong with him.

I went from the hospital back to the City via the LIRR. Pal Shazar for Jules Shear, her ex.

I was glad to see that Pal still remembered me, I haven't seen her since she moved to California, a couple of years ago. I found out that the show that I was told was snowed out last year wasn't, she performed. I made all that effort to get there to be told the show was cancelled and it wasn't. If I had hung around I'd have seen her.

Tonight was the first time I've seen Pal with a band. I've only seen her as a solo before performing in folk venues but at heart she was always a rocker. Her band was great and I thought that the drummer looked sort of familiar. He was, it was Dan Hickey from TMBG.

She had some new songs, which were great, and I signed up for her mailing list so I won't miss her next time she is around.

I had never seen Jules before; he puts on a good show. You might have heard about him as the founder of the MTV unplugged series. He is someone who has worked with everyone; he's a musician's musician. I have never seen anyone play the guitar like he does. He plays it lefty with the strings set up as on a righty guitar. That wasn't what got me though, Hendrix did that. He only uses the thumb of his right hand. He either made bar chords or just held one string at a time. That is a style I've never seen before. I wonder if it came out of some disability, perhaps he can't use his fingers on his right hand with enough precision. If anyone has heard of this style or knows the explanation let me know.

When I got home I made plans with Gella to see Kat in Beethoven's 9th tomorrow. That should be fun. I'll be getting home pretty late so I might not update next till Saturday morning.
