I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Rules of Attraction

I have a friend who I think is quite attractive. She once vehemently objected to being called cute. She knew she wasn't cute. I asked how. She said that someone told her. Why was the person telling her she was not cute the truth and not my telling her she was? Everyone I have mentioned this to agrees with me, that she is cute.

I have another friend who considered herself an amoeba despite the fact that two men were at the time vying for her affection. She was totally oblivious to this of course.

One more story about one more friend: She says to me; "I can't wait till I get to a place where looks aren't so important.' The irony of this story is that she is exceptionally beautiful. When I told this one to a friend her response was; "Do you mean _______ the most beautiful Frühead with the possible exception of _____?" A little extra irony? The one who commented on her was one of the friends from the first two stories.

I've been thinking about these stories and all the other people that have misconceptions of their own attractiveness. Now me being a scientist at heart I decided to make an operational definition of being attractive that we can all use. An operational definition is one, which relies on a test or an experiment. It is not descriptive. I came up with a really simple one. You are attractive if you attract people. It seems self-evident but people don't seem to believe in it. I won't try to define relative attractiveness. Who is more attractive, the one who more people desire or the one that is desired more strongly? You can only discuss who is more attractive to an individual.

The most important thing is that anyone who has attracted that special someone is as attractive as they will ever need to be.
