I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Bye George

Time to start writing. Today my head is fine but my left elbow hurts. What's going on here? Is one of you sticking pins in a voodoo doll? I don't believe in that of course but I heard it works whether you believe in it or not.

I vegetated again yesterday and once again I didn't cook. That's just not good. I'm having trouble getting going. I'm way behind in my emails. I'll get through them today or die in the attempt.

Yesterday in the early evening I decided that I have to leave my apartment so I walked over to local supermarket for a few things, most importantly seltzer so I can make egg creams. OY! I forgot to check to see if they have U-Bet. I still have but I'm running low and last time I checked Stop 'n' Shop the supermarket I do most of my shopping at was out. Summer without egg creams is like popcorn without butter. What's the point?

I was rewarded for going out by more than seltzer. I ran into Nancy and Punky. Nancy is aWFUV volunteer and a neighbor of mine. Punky is her dog. As people came by to talk to Punky Nancy and I basically repeated what I said in my last entry that dogs make people friendlier. Punky's best dog friend came by and I feel bad I forgot her name. I forgot her owner's name too. I made a real effort.

Nancy and I had one of those great meandering conversations. Punky didn't say much. We started with WFUV and ended up with lions having sex. Seems par for the course to me.

One thing we discussed was famous alumni from our alma maters, Ohio University and Queens College. Guess which one I went to. When I got home I checked for famous Queens College Alumni on Wikipedia and it's an impressive list, List of famous Queens College People.. The Big Three are Paul Simon, Jerry Seinfeld and Carole King. Other performers are, Joy Behar, Dennis Elsas (WFUV DJ!), Marvin Hamlish, Ron Jeremy (Porn star that went to my high school too), Ray Romano, Howie Rose (Mets announcer, he too went to my high school and sat next to me in earth science),and Michael Savage.

There are even some science and technology people I've heard of. Stanley Milgram who performed the famous experiment where people thought they were giving painful electric shocks to people, and Robert Moog of synthesizer fame By the way his last name rhymes with rogue. I added Kenneth Appel one of the mathematicians that proved the four color map theorem. I also added two of my professors to the noted faculty list, Elliott Mendolson and Edwin E. Moise

Look at the page and see if there is anyone you can add.

George Steinbrenner the owner of the Yankees died and surprisingly I feel bad. Sure he was a control freak bastard but it won't be the same without him. As he got older he mellowed and stop firing managers every other week and making public rants but he never lost his passion for winning. I wish the Met owners felt the same way. It took a long time for him to come around but he finally came to see that the key to financial success was to build on Yankee tradition. The Mets never get that. In the 80s the Mets were far more popular but they let that slide and now they are second class citizens in their own city. I'm loyal the assumption when you meet someone is that they are a Yankee fan.

You have to give George his props for giving Seinfeld the right to lampoon him. He was a character on the show. You never saw his face and the voice was Larry David's but it was always funny.

I might be able to get by today without air conditioning. It was 80 before but it's down to 78 and it looks like a storm is brewing. I'm not wearing a shirt and have the window fan and overhead fan blowing on me. That's enough even if it warms up a bit.

Now I'll make my breakfast. Tonight I'm going to John Platt's On Your Radar. It isn't just a concert but the monthly meeting of the music lovers club.
