I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity. Edgar Allen Poe
The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. - H. L. Mencken Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so -Bertrand Russell What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ... -James Branch Cabell
2000-11-10 - 06:07:45 I was a total Donut Tonight. I left work early to buy tickets to see Dan Bern. Once I was at the Merc Lounge I remembered that I also needed to buy tix for TMBG. Then I started looking for a concert to go to tonight. I forgot I all ready got tix from Wfuv to see Solas and Chris Smithers. They were great which brings me to the topic of todays essay. Magic is Loose it the World. The line is not mine. Its from Robert Heinlein of all people. Its so not like him and I love it. Its from Waldo. I really believe that Magic is loose in the world. No I don't mean spells, or ESP or psychic phenomena, ghosts or the supernatural. they are bunk. I mean real magic, its all around us, music, baseball, quantum mechanics. A strange mix I know but they are all magic as far as I'm concerned. Lets talk music since that was what started me thinking aobut it. When Moses was competing with Pharoahs magicians they turned their staffs into snakes, Childsplay. Music changes the way we see the entire world. It can be all types of music too. Beethoven's ninth, Ashely MacIsaac's Violin, Chuck Berry's guitar, and Frvous harmonies can all do it. Tonight Solas was performing Irish music and Chris Smithers the Blues but they both went straight to my heart. No magic of Gandalf, Merlin, or Glynda the Good Witch of the North could do as much.I have gone into concerts totally depressed and come out dancing. With all the things I complain about I'm still very lucky. There are always things in the world to appreciate. So on this cheerful day I won't even play "What Evil Chez did Today." That's all folks. I signed the Pro-Truth Pledge: please hold me accountable.
