I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Strange Zoe

I have a lot of catching up to do. That means I wont give things the attention they deserve.

Friday was a very long day. I was awake for 22 hours and that was on about two and a half hours of sleep.

WFUV did not reach their goal for the fund drive so after taking off Thursday they added one extra day. Nora and I were on the job and did our 6AM to 6 PM shift. Because of the short notice we were short handed. The listeners really responded and called in their pledges. That meant we were very busy. I had to take a lot of calls myself. I had Nora train the new people because I was too busy. I was on the go the whole time and wasnt tired at all because my adrenaline was pumping.

When I left at six I didnt come home. I went to the Outpost in the Burbs to see The Strangelings.

I was worried about the trip for good reason. At the station I had constant stimulation, at the concert Id have stimulation, during the drive I knew the fatigue would hit me. It did. I almost fell asleep twice. I didnt but it was close.

Traffic wasnt too bad and I was one of the first people there. The first was Ken and I joined him. Ken is a WFUV volunteer and Neals cousin. We had arranged that the first one there would save a seat for the other. There was no real need as Pete and Maura saved seats for us.

The Strangelings were wonderful as always. I love the group that The Kennedys assembled. Ken and Rebecca, Chris Thompson, Cheryl Prashker, and Eric Lee are not only great musicians, they are wonderful people. I enjoy talking to all of them so much. They are all smart, and nice, and fun.

I of course knew a lot of the people in the audience or volunteering so I spent a lot of the evening socializing. I wanted to talk to Rich, who ran the series, about getting Iain Campbell Smith to play but found out that he is no longer there and hasnt really been replaced. Things are now being handled by the board as a group so I talked to my friend Jill about him and gave her his new CD. I know Jill from WFUV. They have an opening when he is going to be here so things might actually work out.

I stayed there till about midnight then drove home. I was lucky, I had no trouble staying awake. I didnt have to get more coffee.

Yesterday was my house concert with Zo Lewis.. When I got home I found messages from seven people canceling. I got three more on Saturday. Larry and Diana were going to cancel but came because I really needed them. Im glad they are good friends. I was distraught most of the day. That made things worse as I couldnt get myself to get ready for the concert. I finally did though. I started feeling better when Gene and Isabel arrived. I vented for a few minutes then talked to them and things didnt seem so bleak.

The concert was small but fun as it is pretty much impossible to not have fun with Zo. She brought her keyboard, guitar, uke, spoons, and pennywhistle. She has enough energy to get a crowd of the dead whooping it up.

It as a little sad after the concert because nobody stayed over. This was my first house concert without houseguests. By 10:10 PM I was alone. I missed the post concert hijinx not to mention the help cleaning up. Hopefully my next concert some of my out of town friends will be able to come.

I have pictures of everything in my camera. It looks like there will be at least one photo essay coming up here. Maybe three, the Mets home opener, the Strangelings and Zo.
