I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Lift Up Your Hands

I went to school today to give the final to the student who missed it. When I got there I found that one of the students that cheated was complaining about his grade. What chutzpah. Hes emailed me several times to complain and now hed complaining to the department.

The student who missed the test showed up early and finished the test in an hour, that was good. He ended up getting an A in the course. I would have liked an apology for putting me out but I wasnt going to push it.

A few bad things today. Poor Carey was sick and I didnt get to talk to her. I love my daily Carey fix. I also didnt get my Leah fix. I dont know why. She calls me just about every night. Then I couldnt talk to Stacey, I was supposed to help her with her math. I dont know when her test is, I hope I can talk to her before then.

On the bright side I did have an IM conversation with the swoonable Renita. Thats a pleasure that I dont get to enjoy nearly enough. She told me that shes been getting James Branch Cabell books out of the library and has been reading them. Ive given Jurgen to so many people and shes the only one who seems to have liked it. Shes even read a book that I havent, There Were Two Pirates. As if she hadnt earned enough Gordonpoints from that, tonight she was off to see a live performance of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. If she starts buying the Doctor Who CDs I think Im going to have to proposeJ I dont talk to Renita that often but Ive done it enough to know that shes a very special person. She always seems to go out of her way to make others feel good. It isnt a matter of being polite or having social skills. She really cares.

Back to Hedwig for a bit. Stacey wrote about how she found it depressing. I always find it uplifting. I listen to the sound track when I need a boost. I know the story is sad and there are parts that make me cry. I still come away from it feeling good. When I lift up my hands, I lift up my heart too. Id love for someone to do that at FRFF. I could just see everyones hands in the air. Of course some evil people would be saying Rai Di Dai.

Most of what I wrote about today was not being able to talk to my friends. Yet its one of those days that I remember how lucky I am to have them. I have the best friends in the world. Thanks.

OOO, I almost forgot the quote. This is by Thomas Jefferson. He has a lot of good ones.

The Newtonian principle of gravitation is now more firmly established, on the basis of reason, than it would be were the government to stop in, and to make it an article of necessary faith. Reason and experiment have been indulged, and error has fled before them.
