I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me โ€” that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter โ€” except to show how very dull we are ...

French toast! The most important thing I have to write about is French toast. Months ago, I read an article that said that while most people think of French toast as an egg dish, chefs consider it a milk dish; the best French toast uses more milk or even cream, that is usual. Challah was on sale Tuesday, so I bought it and that inevitably led to me making French toast yesterday. It was the first time since I read that article. I used more milk and I used half & half. I didn't measure anything, I just did it by eye. It came out a different food. The French toast was creamy, a completely different consistency. It was also amazing. Give this a try. I of course used real maple syrup. As a bonus Finlandia butter was on sale and I used that. It makes a big difference, I tried it on the heel of the challah too, so I could taste it in isolation. I used more milk and half & half but the same number of eggs. That meant making a huge breakfast. I had sausages with it. There is nothing like starting the day with a lumber jack breakfast.

Baseball has been berry berry good to me. The Mets won 2โ€“0 and my fantasy baseball team had a great night; the National Batnoses are in first place. I get so much pleasure at just looking at the league's website and reading about my players. It's like chocolate covered matzoh, far better than it has any right to be.

I got an impressive looking piece of male yesterday.

From the envelope you'd take it to be from the government. It says it's official and to not destroy it. I suspected that it wasn't. You open it up and it says Congressional District Census! Of course, right under that it tells you that it's all a lie and that this is from the GOP. I get emails from the Democrats where donation pitches are disguised as polls, but this is different. First off, I signed up for the Democratic Lists. Second, they don't call it a census and make it sound official. If it were postage paid, I'd send it in, but it isn't so I'm going to give my answers here. I'll give the choices and put my answers in bold.

  1. How Confident are you that America's economy will tonight to improve the next 12 months?
    No Opinion
  2. Which of the following is the single most important economic issue facing you and your family?
Other Strengthening the social safety net
  3. Do you agree that President Trump and our Republican leaders in Congress should be aggressive in working to pass legislation to create job, cut taxes and regulations, end economic uncertainty, and make America more competitive?
    No
  4. Do you support the Republican tax plan recently passed by Congress?
Oppose [shouldn't this have been a yes or no question?]
  5. Do you believe ObamaCare should be repealed and replaced or simply fixed?
Fixed [I'm fine replacing it with a single payer system, but I know that's not what they have in mind. I'm also OK with something along the line of the Swiss system which Krugman describes as "Obamacare done right" It is a true universal health care system and gives the leads to the best health outcomes]
  6. Do you support Republican efforts to enact a market-based health care system and Health Savings Accounts that would allow Americans to control their own medical care?
    No
  7. Do you support President Trump's efforts to secure out nation's borders and work aggressively to enforce long-standing immigration laws to solve our nation's illegal immigration problem?
    No
  8. Do you support canceling all federal funding to sanctuary cities that fail to enforce U.S. Immigration Laws
    No
  9. Do you believe America should suspend immigration from terror-prone regions where vetting cannot safely occur?
No [It's monstrous, it's condemning people to death and suffering. When the terrorists were the IRA think they'd have banned immigration from the British Isles?]
  10. Do you support creating a skills-based immigration system that is more responsive to the needs of our economy and preserves the quality of jobs available to American Workers?
    No
  11. The Democrats fixation on "climate change" has led to costly regulations that are negatively affecting our nation's economy across the board. Do you think climate change is a major threat to our nation?"
Yes [This starts with a false premise about the negative effects on the economy] [It should say "Democrats and the vast majority of climate scientists"]
  12. Do you think race relations in America are getting better or worse?
    Worse
  13. President Trump has called for eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and transferring the educational supervision from the federal government to local communities. Do you agree with such a proposal?
No. [I think the feds should have more control. Look what a terrible job Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Kansas are doing. ]
  14. Do you support canceling all of Barack Obama's unconstitutional executive orders that created new regulations, fees, and other freedom destroying measures?
No [I'm tempted to say yes as Obama never destroyed our freedom, so this would have no effect]
  15. Do you believe more federal laws that impede individuals Second Amendment rights are a proper response to gun violence?
Yes [This time I'm tempted to say no as banning well-regulated militias would not help prevent gun violence and that's what the 2nd Amendment is about. Even when the Supreme Court decided that the first part of the Amendment was just there to pad the word count they only said people have the right to keep a gun in their home for self-protection. Since that initial decision the court has not found any other laws to violate the 2nd Amendment]
  16. Do you agree that in response to the Department of Veteran's Affairs failing in its role to properly serve the health care needs of America's veterans that they should be guaranteed the right to choose their own doctor and have full access to care outside the VA?
    No
  17. Do you agree with President Trump that fixing our nation's inner cities and working to rebuild our crumbling highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, and hospitals must be a top federal priority in the next few years?
    Yes [That's a qualified yes as Trump has done nothing to show that he thinks it is a priority, so I am not agreeing with him}
  18. Is President Trump right to pursue fair trade deals and re-negotiate present trade policies with other countries as a means of boosting the America's economy by protecting and creating jobs, increasing America's wages, and reducing our nation's trade deficit?
No [The effect it would have is exactly the opposite of what's intended].
  19. President Trump is committed to reducing crime in America and ending violence against law enforcement officers. Do you support these efforts?
No. [Obviously I want lower crime and few cops getting killed but not the way that Trump wants it done. He doesn't realize that the crime rate is at a historical low so how can you expect him to understand how to improve things? Why is there no mention of reducing police misconduct or the killing of unarmed blacks? If people trusted the police, the police would be safer]

Section IV - National Defense

  1. Do you support rebuilding our nation's military by eliminating the defense sequester and expanding our military investment?
    No
  2. Which of the following do you think will have the most impact on Foreign policy in the next 5 years?
    • The unstable political situation in the Middle East
    • North Korea's threat of using nuclear weapons
    • Iran's development of nuclear weapons
    • The growing military and economic power of China
    • The growing influence and power of Russia
    • Unstable economic markets around the world
    • Increased terrorism around the world
    • All of the above [The person who wrote this question doesn't know the meaning of the word most]
    • Other Trump's ignorance and lack of judgment and character

  3. Should America take military action if necessary to keep North Korea from using nuclear weapons?
No. [It would most likely kill hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of South Koreans. It could even reach tens of millions and include Japanese]
  4. Do you support or oppose the United States sending ground troops to Iraq, Syria, and other areas to destroy ISIS and other radical Islamic terrorist groups?
Unsure. [I'm not privy to the top-secret intelligence needed to make the judgment. I do know that I don't trust Trump's judgment. Obama might have made mistakes but whoever is president is going to make mistakes. There are too many unknowns. I trusted Obama to carefully consider things, not Trump.]
  5. Do you agree with the Republicans commitment to continue to fully fund a "missile defense shield" for our nation to protect us from future missile threats?
No [for the simple reason that they don't work so will waste money and give people a false sense of security. ]
  6. Should the U.S. take a more muscular attitude toward Russian and China as they move to establish themselves as military and economic superpowers?
No Opinion [What is this the Cold War? The threats posed by Russia and China have nothing to do with each other. They are lumped together to give cover to Trump's infatuation with Putin. In the two separate cases it depends on what muscular means. The question is so vague I have no opinion]
  7. Do you agree that our federal government must go all out to combat cyberattacks on our nation's government, business, and infrastructure?
Yes [I wish Trump and the GOP felt the same way.]

This was of course followed by the real point of the "2018 Congressional District Census" asking me for money.

I will try this again with a real survey from YouGov or Pew. Being able to copy and paste the questions and choices would make things much easier for me.

I gotta run the Met game started. It's on Facebook, as I don't have a TV that's great for me. The announcers are terrible. I missed all but the last out of the first inning.
