I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

At Long Last Eric

Why do I care what font I use when I write this on Word? You won't even see it. But I do care. I want my Book Antiqua. At least using this antique version of Word I don't have to manually switch it to Draft Mode and not skipping lines every time I start a new document.

Last night was a blast from the past, I went to see Eric Schwartz for the first time in years. Well OK I just saw him at NERFA but that doesn't count. This was a full house concert. I would not have known about it if Carolyn hadn't invited me to the Facebook Event. The show was at a beautiful home on the Upper East Side. If the 4 train were running normally it would have been a breeze to get there but of course it was running local in Manhattan … till one stop before I needed to get off so I still had to switch to the 6; Murphy's law wins again. Of course I was prepared for this so I left early and was one of the first ones to arrive. That meant I got to grab the prime seat on the couch. I love sitting down front but the comfy seat comes first. I quickly bonded with BJ the host as he has framed pictures of magicians on his wall and actually knows the Amazing Randi! You know he's a childhood hero of mine. I had invited some of the old Fruhead Eric Schwartz fans to the show but Carolyn and Peter who invited me were the only ones there. I did know a few other people. Mark Aaron James and Todd. Mark gets all three names as he's also a singer/songwriter and he says people call him by all three names.

There was lots of great food but all I needed was the little hot dogs. You know I'm a sucker for those. Ok I've done my duty, I discussed commuting and food so you know this is really me. You know in the old days I didn't write about the music at all. That was a lot less pressure.

I was saying to Eric that everyone knows him but I bet that's not true amongst My Gentle Readers. All the NERFAites and Fruheads know him but I'm not so sure about the rest of you. So how to convey Eric. I wrote a friend that I invited to go with me that he's very funny and also vulgar in a 12-year-old boy sort of way. Yeah there's a lot of sex and explicit language and I don't usually like that but I do from him so there's something different about it. It's also very clever. He knows how to use language and how to write songs. And I'm totally missing the mark. What Eric is, is fun. He's a sure crowd pleaser. I was trying to figure out why he didn't play my house when I did house concerts. Then I remembered, it's because my goal was always to introduce people to new music and my friends back then all knew Eric.

I knew one other person there Jagoda who accompanied him on Shitar. That is not a typo. It's a guitar meant to be played as a percussion instrument. As the stings are not played it does not need to be a fine guitar. I doubt it can be played as a guitar at all. Jagoda is a percussionist that has played with so many of my friends. I first saw him in the Bongos and since then off the top of my head Amy Speace, Spuyten Duyvil, and now Eric. There were others he played with as one shots.

After the show I got to ride back most of the way home with Carolyn and Peter. That was nice.

Eric got me all nostalgic so now I'm listening to Da Vinci's Notebook. For a while they were high on the musicians I saw the most often. I think DVN was the first band I marched for. So this is all part of me becoming who I am.
