I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity. Edgar Allen Poe
The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. - H. L. Mencken Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so -Bertrand Russell What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ... -James Branch Cabell
May 09, 2014 - 9:35 a.m. Whoa I am starting to write before 9 AM. when's the last time I did that? OK it is 8:59 but that's still before 9:00. I got up at 7 today. I wasn't really happy about that as I didn't go to sleep till after 1 AM. School is getting more and more annoying. On Tuesday there was a meeting during free hour in the room I have my precalculus class. I got there and found the students outside. They hadn't cleared out from the meeting. I came in and told them I had a class then. One woman said, "We are just cleaning up. That consisted of that one woman throwing out one paper plate. There was a group of teachers talking. A few minutes later I said, "Excuse me we really have to start." And she reiterated that they were cleaning up. But it was still a bunch of teachers talking and doing nothing. When they finally left they hadn't cleaned up the only thing that needed cleaning up, the coffee pot on one of the desks. They didn't even apologize for delaying my class by 10 minutes. And then as the admin wasn't in and I couldn't get a new marker I had so much trouble writing on the board. I was able to get a marker from another prof yesterday morning. Then back in the precalculus class but in another room someone had rearranged the desks so that many of them were not facing the front. they were sideways blocking the aisle. Some were set up right in front facing backward. Obviously there was some sort of meeting there and they didn't feel the need to put things back so the room can function as a classroom. After class I managed to get some work done writing the Finite Math final. I'll finish writing the finals this weekend. I also have to grade two tests. They were take-home tests and that makes it easier. of course they will still make tons of mistakes. Last night was better, I went to see Barnaby Bright at Rockwood Music Hall. I was marching of course. I sat with Chris and Fred. I decided to not worry about taking pictures. I took a few but I don't think they are worth posting here. The show was a mixture of older material, mostly off "Longest Day" and songs on their upcoming album. There's quite a change of direction. The new songs are not as dark. I never noticed the irony that Barnaby Bright plays so many dark songs. I usually live for noticing things like that. Like the last time I saw Barnaby Right at Rockwood there was an annoying person taking flash pictures from the mezzanine. I was repeatedly blinded. If you read this please don't do that again. If you are standing next to him next show please tell him to stop. Their next New York Gig is Falcon Ridge weekend so I won't be going to that, unfortunate timing. It was also unfortunate that they forgot to tell people that merch was on sale in the back room. I found out from someone that works there that it's officially called Rockwood 3. I am not going to use that as 3 is the stage in the basement below the back room. I did manage to sell some CDs and to pressure Chris and Fred into buying posters. Hey that's why I do the merch, I know how to twist arms. Katherine was at the show with her friend Gidge and we went next door for dinner atter the show. Gidge is starting a house concert series in Jersey City. Bobtown is playing the first oe in June. It looks like Barnaby Bright will be playing in autumn. I don't think it's going to be only band whose names begin with B but I could be wrong. One of the things were talked about at dinner was the value of brevity so I'm not going to worry that this entry is short. After dinner I took the subway back to Atlantic with Katherine where we went our separate ways. Tonight I'm making a rare trip to the Outpost in the Burbs. It's just so hard to get home from there. But tonight's show is Richard Barone in the round with Milton, Jeffrey Gains and Deni Bonet. I asked Deni for a ride back to the City and she's giving it to me. I still have to find my way home from Washington Heights but I can do that. It will be a late night. Now for something completely different. How about trying to refrain from turning the dial to 11 on political language. I go through my facebook feed and it looks like the apocalypse has started. Let's make it clear that Obama is not a communist, socialist, or fascist. The Bill of Rights has not be shredded. But it isn't only the right that does it. America is not now a theocracy. Until they started stoning people for adultery and throwing acid in the eyes of little girls for daring to go to school the religious right is not the Taliban. We don't need to keep stirring up the base. OK, I'm getting in under 900 words so this is still short. I signed the Pro-Truth Pledge: please hold me accountable.
