With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
June 26, 2009 - 10:53 a.m. I'm feeling so much better today. I am not at all uncomfortable but I am still aware I have an ileum. I'm guessing that will go away by tomorrow. The test is that I ate last night and had no pain afterwards. I'm going to celebrate by cooking up the rest of the corn I bought. Not really I just said that to tease my sister. I have a confession to make. I am not at all affected by the deaths of Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawsett. I'm not happy they are dead but people die every day and I care about them no more than the random strangers. I wasn't a fan when they were alive, and they weren't a part of my life. I feel worse about Ed McMahan. I watched him for years. I'm just bringing this up to help the other people that don't feel bad to not feel guilty about it. I felt no emotional connection with them when they were alive, I'm not going to start now. I forgot to write about my favorite thing that happened yesterday. On the way back from the DMV, right at the subway entrance, there was a van set up as a booth to sell a Medicare health insurance plan. One of the guys said to me, "All the Yankee fans are signing up for it." I was wearing a Met cap. I responded, "That's a reason for me not to sign up. They have proven their bad judgment." That started a conversation that had nothing to do with insurance but was all about baseball. He was a Yankee fan and we exchanged barbs for about five minutes. We were total strangers bonding over something we disagree about. That's not really true. We were bonding over loving baseball and loving the rivalry. He was enjoying it as much as I was. When I left I said, "If Met and Yankee fans can get along so can anyone." He agreed. We shook hands before I left. Isaac Asimov said that sports fandoms should be the model for group identification. You care passionately about it but you know it isn't important and you'd never think of discriminating on the basis of it. I know there are exceptions but for the most part it's true. I just felt my face. I'm going to have to shave today! Not shaving was a real advantage of growing a beard. When I was at The Great Hudson River Clearwater Revival I signed up to get the Times Weekender subscription, Friday - Sunday. This morning I was awoken by a phone call at 8:45 in the morning asking me if I got my paper. I told the caller that she woke me up. I did not get an apology. I also did not get my Times. When I woke up and looked there was a paper at my door, The Wall Street Journal. I called back and they said I'd get my Times between ten and noon. Lets see if it's there. It isn't. Reading the paper online is just not the same as reading the print paper. I don't find all the articles I want to read. I especially don't find the ones that I don't know I want to read till I take a look at them. Those are the ones that really keep me informed. When I'm at school I get the paper for free during the week so I decided to save money by getting just the weekender. As a bonus I got a tote back and a stainless steel water bottle. I am also only paying half price. I filled this entry with potpourri. That's not a bad thing. Sometimes that's how my mind works. Extra credit question. What is the title a reference to?
