When they burn books, they will, in the end, burn human beings
January 25, 2008 - 11:05 p.m. I've had a looooooong day yet this will be a short entry. The day started at 4 AM. I woke up before my alarm set for 4:15. I ended up getting about three and a half hours of sleep. I showered and dressed and had time to go through my CDs looking for ones that I had gotten volunteering at WFUV pledge drives and didn't want. I gathered them together and brought them to the station's first three-day-weekend drive. I picked up Nora right on time and we headed up to the Bronx. So you know how I said that I updated my E-Zpass account online? Well when we got to the bridge the toll gate wouldn't open and it said that my balance was low. For some insane reason even though everything is electronic it takes time for the system to update. It wasn't a real problem. Someone came over to my car, read the barcode on the E-Zpass and took the toll money from me and we were on our way. It did mean we weren't the first ones at the station. As we pulled into the lot I saw Caroline. That surprised me as she moved to Cape Cod. It also made me happy as she is a wonderful baker and I saw she was carrying packages. When we got in I set up the phones and everything was ready before any other volunteers arrived. I became extra happy when I saw that Caroline made Chocolate Chip brownies! She always makes sure to make something chocolate for me but this was super chocolate on chocolate! Yes chocolate gets exclamation marks! Why does she make something that she knows I'll love? Because my reaction after eating what she bakes is to tell her that I love her. Rule 1, I love everyone who gives me chocolate more than everyone that doesn't give me chocolate. No, that is not shallow. The drive went well and I had my usual great time. I got to spend time with lots of friends. Two people from my house concert were there, Jim and Ron. I had a great discussion with John Platt about Rock 'n' Roll. I thought it was right up his alley and asked him if he had seen it. He had and he loved it. I got to bond with someone over the show. John is once again stalking me. Not only will I see him at the drive this weekend but he's emceeing the Red Molly/Pat Wictor show Saturday Night and he's going to be at the Blind Boys of Alabama WFUV member's concert on Monday. Howard Stern, no not the radio guy the math teacher/volunteer, and I had lots of fun talking about math and problems with our students. One of the students was impressed with my commitment to the environment and thinks that Lena is totally unreasonable for not doing her bit to stop global warming and blames her for the eventual extinction of the polar bear. In case you've forgotten Lena is wasting oil and water by insisting that we take separate showers when she visits next month. Some people have absolutely no sense of priorities. As is proper in my family I discussed the food first thing but I neglected to complete the menu. Today was one of the best food days at a drive. Breakfast was super disappointing. It was just bagels. They didn't even have peanut butter at first so I had it with butter. It did eventually got there so I had another bagel with peanut butter. Things picked up after that. For lunch they had pizza. The station is in the Italian section of the Bronx so it was really good pizza and they ordered lots of pepperoni. There was also delicious panini. For dinner there was an amazing chicken with ham dish. It was made absolutely perfectly. I have never had such juicy chicken. The pièce de résistance was this huge chocolate layer cake with an incredible mousse filling. Everyone went gaga over it. The station was a bit shorthanded of staff which made things a bit more difficult but we managed to get by. I ended up having to stay late to ease the transition to the evening shift. I didn't get out of there till almost seven. I got home watched some TV and took a nap then came online then started to write this entry. I guess that brings me right up to the present. I got my usual supply of new CDs, here is my haul:
I think I may already have Half the Perfect World but I took it just in case. She is a real favorite of mine. Now I'm going to get ready for bed. I get to sleep late tomorrow, 6:15 but I'd like to get more sleep than last night. Before I do that I'll take down my Festivus Pole. It looks like this isn't a short entry. Most of you missed my last entry go back and read it now if you did.
