With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
August 11, 2009 - 2:15 a.m. Today my arm felt fine, my tummy didn't hurt and I wasn't running to the bathroom every hour or so. It was the best day my body's had in a long time. That despite the fact that it hit 91° today and I don't have air conditioning. I pulled out my "neck buddies." They are tubes filled with a gel that absorbs water. You put it around your neck and it keeps you cool. I have three of them, two of them didn't work right anymore, the gel congealed. One of those was still usable. My old one works fine. I highly recommend them. I also drank a lot of water, an iced coffee (decaf) with ice cream, and just wore shorts in the apartment. I went out tonight to see Anthony da Costa at the Living Room. He is playing every Monday in August. This week he was backed by Abbie Gardner. It's been four whole days since I saw her. This was one of those concerts/social events. When I walked in the door I saw Chris, Gene and Isabel, and Jim. We were soon joined by Richard and Viki. We all sat together along with Dennis, Anthony's father, crowded around two tables down front. After we sat down Barbara came by and said hi. I love having so many friends around. Anthony called A.J. Roach up to do one song. A.J. just played The Budgiedome. It took me a moment to recognize him. I didn't feel bad because he didn't recognize me. After the show most of my friends made a quick getaway. I talked a bit to Barbara and ended up leaving the same time as Anthony, Abbie, and AJ. I hadn't eaten before the show and decided to have something special for dinner and went to Katz's. Guess where they were going? Great minds think alike so I joined them. AJ was with his friend Melissa. She's also a musician. I was the only talentless one there. I took pictures tonight but I'm so far behind with my photos that I don't know when I'll get to them. I finished editing my Washington photos and I have all my Falcon Ridge photos done but I'm going to give the photos a night off tonight. I'm reading Bertrand Russell's Unpopular Essays and it's really connecting with me. One of the essays I read tonight was called "An Outline of Intellectual Rubbish." I love the title and I love this line; "I shall mix the silliness of our day with those of former centuries." His style is not ethereal like Thoreau and Kerouac, it is much closer to my own voice, and those of my friends. It's sarcastic and to the point. It isn't soothing like Walden or the Dharma Bums but it is connects more directly with me. It isn't what I expected. Before this I've only read Russell's mathematical writing. It's 2:14 AM. I better get to bed now.
