With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
October 23, 2006 - 12:14 p.m. I had a really bad night's sleep. My tummy kept me up most of the night. Good thing I'm just giving tests today so I don't really have to concentrate and I can spend most of my time sitting down. Yesterday I went to the Celebration of Songwriters at the Port Washington Library. I left later than I wanted to and got there about 25 minutes before the show started. I still ended up with front row seats. The performers were Pat Wictor, the husband and wife duo of Martha Trachtenberg and Tom Griffith and Little Toby Walker. The emcee was John Platt from WFUV. Before the show I said hi to John and Pat. I was happy and a bit surprised that Pat remembered my name. He said that The Budgiedome was one of his favorite parts of FRFF. That really made me happy. He'll be back next year as the scuttlebutt is that he is one of the winners of the emerging artist showcase so he'll be on he Falcon Ridge Preview Tour next year. I am getting more and more impressed with him. He sings the blues but with a sort of The Kennedys positive vibe. I like what Little Toby said, “Pat’s a gentle soul, I’m a tortured one.” Pat discussed having religious impulses even while being a skeptic. That is just how I feel. We both handle it the same way. We’ll use religious language but mean it totally metaphorically. Pat is also an ancient history buff who will read Thucydides for fun; My kind of guy. He didn’t know that he looked like Orlando Bloom till I told him. Martha and Tom were the only ones that I hadn’t seen before. They remind me a bit of Margo Hennebach and Marc Saunders. They were witty and talented but not quite as good as Margo and Marc. Little Toby is a major figure on the Long Island Music scene though not well known out of the area. He should be. He plays blues guitar like nobody’s business and writes really clever biting lyrics. He and Pat were enough to keep any blues guitar aficionado happy. After the show I talked to Toby and invited him to the Budgiedome. I then hung around and talked to Pat and John for a while before leaving. I wrote my test last night and did a pretty good job. I was good and took it then and there and caught my mistakes so I could give my classes a test where everything works out nicely. I cleaned my room a bit more and changed the EZ-Pass over from my mother’s name to mine. After all that I made calls for MoveOn.org. It was late so I called people in Nevada, which is three hours behind us. I reached a lot more people than in my other sessions and got a number of positive responses. The Elections are in two weeks; There is still time for you to make calls. The Democrats have a real chance to take over both houses of Congress but it is going to take a big get out the vote effort. Don’t just complain about the Government, do something to change it. The Bush administration needs another branch of government to hold it accountable. That’s a fairly good day for me in getting done what I had to. Today I have to grade the tests. That might have to wait till tomorrow as I’m seeing Slaid Cleaves tonight.
