I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Radio Days

I don't know what to write today. I did not leave the house or even get dressed yesterday. I can talk about what I did, eat and listen to the radio. OK the radio was on the computer but it was streaming of broadcasts so it counts.

So what did I eat? Yes food comes first. I'm making an effort to eat better. I was surviving on sausages for a while. Even if they are chicken sausages and even if it's me that's not the best thing. So yesterday I made what I always think of as real food, roasted chicken thighs. I make that better than anyone. I seasoned it with jerk seasoning and garlic powder. The key is to not overcook it. Too often it's dried out. I had garlic mashed potatoes with that. Yes I like garlic.

What did I listen to on the radio? Mainly WfUV of course. John Platt's Sunday Breakfast, the Irish show, Ceol na nGael hosted by Megan Scully and Shannon Spillane, and Bob Sherman's Woody's Children. Thanks to the poor tining of Lori not LORi's wedding I have not yet met Shannon. I will correct that in a few week at the next drive. She doesn't know it yet but a condition of hosting Ceol na nGael is friending me on Facebook. And they played someone I know, Burning Bridget Cleary who I wrote about yesterday. Bob's guests were Modern Man. I was shocked to hear that he hadn't discovered them to this last NERFA. He's the dean of New York Folk DJs. He knows everybody. He was the first one anyplace to play Christine Lavin and Chris is the one that introduced them to me. Just goes to show that just because somebody should know someone it doesn't mean he will. I know people often get shocked that I don't know people they expect me to. They forget that I'm an idiot and forget half the people I meet.

I do a funny thing with John Platt. His show goes on at 8:00 AM. I'm not usually up that early. So what I do is start listening when I get up and listen to the end. Then I go to the archives on the website and listen to the start of the previous week's show. I'll always hear lots of people I know on John's show. Who was on yesterday? I know he played Mya Adriene Byrne and Bobtown as he mentioned that Katherine Etzel from Bobtown was considering going to Mya's CD Release show then racing to Bobtown's a half hour later. That's what my friends and I are doing. It will be tough for Katherine who is actually performing.

Then after dinner I listened to Joltin' Joe Pszonek's (he's my friend and I still have to check the spelling every time I write it) Radio Nowhere on WMSC, the Montclair State College radio station. Joe's guest DJ was the aforementioned Katherine Etzel. She introduced me to Joe. The theme was Brooklyn musicians; in other words my social set. No way I could miss that. I even helped Katherine out with contact info and sending her a song. I didn't just know so many of the musicians but I had seen or socialized with so many of them with Katherine. Let's see who I can remember. I'll give my usual disclaimer that leaving you out means I'm an idiot, not that I don't love you. She played; Alex Mallett, Carolann Solebello, Mark Allen Berube, Miss Tess, Kristin Andreassen, and Jean Rohe. I have written about each of them many times. OK tell me who I am forgetting. Katherine you can't play.

Wow I wrote more about that than I thought I could. Oh an I'm not done. Now I'm listening to Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. I listen to a lot of radio for someone that doesn't have a radio.

And now for a complete change of topic to something grave. I've been reading quite a bit about how the terrorist attacks in Paris were a failure of French Intelligence. It's based on unreasonable expectations of what is possible. Just because the killers were known to the police and intelligence it doesn't mean they could automatically be stopped. There isn't enough manpower to put everyone suspected under 24/7 surveillance. And if there were would we want to live in a police state where being suspected means you lose all privacy? We know who is involved in organized crime but they still commit crimes and we don't say it's a failure by te police. It isn't a scandal. Do we say that every time a person is sick that their immune system is defective? Of course not. We can't expect perfection and it does no good to act like we should.

OK Wait Wait is over and I'm hungry so I'll post this and eat.
