With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
October 13, 2009 - 10:54 a.m. I'm wasting hours each day dealing with my computers foibles. I need to stop procrastinating and buy a new one. This is getting ridiculous. Speaking of wasting time I did something yesterday I can't remember doing healthy. I took a three hour nap. I didn't plan on it but it happened anyway. There went the day. I was supposed to be shopping then. Now I have to make sure to get out of here early enough to go shopping and get parking that will be legal all day Wednesday. I promised to write about my thoughts today. I said I wouldn't do anything interesting yesterday and I did that with a vengeance. Before I get serious I'll entertain you with an idiot story. When I went to walk to the local stores yesterday as I was leaving I couldn't find my glasses. I spent my life helping my parents look for their glasses and I vowed to be different. I only put my glasses down in a few spots; by my computer, the table near my easy chair, and my night table. They weren't in any of those places. I didn't panic. I knew there were in the house. I had them when I drove home on Sunday night. They'd show up. I trusted that I'd run into them before I needed them again. I only wear them when I'm out of the house. When I went to the bathroom before I went to bed there they were on the toilet seat. I must have taken them off to wash my face. Here's the thing. They wouldn't have been on unless I was about to leave. So when I started looking for them it must have been just minutes after I put them down. It isn't easy not having a brain. There are two lines of thought I can write about. I'll start with the one I haven't written about before. You often hear arguments that say things like we shouldn't be spending money nation building in places like Afghanistan when people are living in poverty in the US. They often blame this on the fact that the American poor are often black and Hispanic. Now yes. I agree that racism is a factor in our lack of funding to fight poverty. People don't want to help people they perceive as different. People they don't identify with. The thing is that is exactly why the people saying that don't want to help the people in Afghanistan. They are different, they aren't Americans. The simple fact is that the people in Afghanistan live in such deep poverty that living in the worst slum in America would feel like the height of luxury to them. They are living on less than a dollar a day. The life expectancy of someone born there today is 44.47 years (that's from the CIA – World Fact Book). They can not be expected to help themselves. They don't have the resources. If we wait to we've solved our own problems millions will die. Afghanistan is by no means the poorest, they rate 214th in life expectancy. The worst is Swaziland where it is only 31.88 years. These people can't afford to wait. We have to help our own poor and those in the rest of the world. I'll leave my other thoughts till tomorrow. They can wait. I want to actually finish this, finish reading the Times online, eat, go shopping and be back early enough to get good parking.
