With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

The only way to find the limits of the possible is by going past them into the impossible.

The Joy of Cooking (for those that can't cook)

I have things to do today. I really should start writing. I have to go to the DMV and renew my registration and I have to vote. I'd also like to do some shopping.

My classes keep growing. I didn't have enough quizzes to hand out to my classes. I had to make copies during the class. I had 30 people in the afternoon class. That's way too big for a math class. It isn't fair to me or the students.

Not much happened yesterday. What am I going to write about? This is LORi's suggestion: I was a comment to my last entry.

What you forgot to add is that your entire harem was all abuzz because we could not FIND you and we were WORRIED. And this is one of the things you always worry about, and now you know you will never get sick or go missing and have it go unnoticed, because your loving harem will say "oh no WHERE is our Sexy Sexy Beast?! We miss him so! He has been out of contact with all of us on all available channels for MANY MANY MINUTES!"

There is totally an entry in this. If you remember to write it. :D

I bet you didn't know I had a harem. I didn't know myself. It fits in with what I've been thinking though. I told Carey to try and convince one of my fiancés to marry me. She doesn't know we are engaged. Now if I can be engaged to someone that doesn’t know we are engaged, why shouldn't I be able to marry someone without her knowledge? I think that's the future of marriage. Gay marriage is a given, marrying people who don't know you are married is pushing the envelope. I do draw the line at anonymous polygamy.

I had some culinary adventures last night. I made a ham steak and was going to make the same glazing I made last time but then decided to experiment. Here's my recipe:

¼ cup brown sugar
1½ tbsp orange juice
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp peanut butter
a squeeze of honey

Put all the ingredients in a dish and microwave for a minute then stir. Brush it on the ham every time you turn it. Turn it frequently.

It was great. There was some left in the dish when I was done. I tasted that without the ham. That was heavenly. I have to figure out a way of serving it. It could be an ice cream topping. Next time I'll try putting some mustard in for something tangier.

I tried something new with the potato too, I roasted them. It would probably have worked better with a red potato but I didn't have one. I took an Idaho and cut it in eight parts. I brushed each with olive oil then sprinkled them with Cajun powder. I put them in a roasting pan and cooked them at 450° for 20 minutes. That's less than half the time needed for a baked potato. I love that. They came out great too. That is the healthiest way I eat potatoes. The only fat is the brushed olive oil. It isn't much work either and the clean up is easier than for fries. This might become a staple for me. I have to figure out how to work peanut butter into the recipe. I should write the peanut butter cookbook. I know there is one but mine will be funkier. So far I have:

  • Peanut Butter Omlet
  • Peanut butter and bacon sandwich
  • Peanut Butter and sausage sandwich
  • Peanut Butter ham glaze
  • Peanut Butter on a baked potato

I'm probably a less experienced cook than 95% of my readers. I'm sure I have a more limited repertoire than most of you yet I feel I'm qualified to give recipes. In fact my limitations are why I'm qualified. If I can do it anyone can. It's an example of one of the best pieces of advice I was ever given. The key to being able to do things is to not be afraid to try. Mike my brother-in-law taught me that about repairing things around the house. It applies to many things. It probably isn't a good idea to apply it to brain surgery.

One more recipe. This came out of the comments on my last entry. Kathy thought that seeing John Gorka and eating s'mores sounded like heaven. That gave me the idea of toasting John and putting him on a Hershey bar between two graham crackers. Jay suggested it be called a s'morka. I'm going to have a concession at FRFF next year selling them.

I think I'm going to wrap this up and make breakfast. The ham steaks come in packages of two. I'm having the second one for breakfast. I don't usually put a glaze on it then but I might try something with maple in it. I saw a recipe online. I then put my eggs right on top of it. That's a hearty breakfast. I'll have to have a light dinner.

I have an idea for tomorrow's entry; things that I'm vain about. That should be funny as you'll be thinking "He's vain about ___________? Doesn't he know it's something he should be ashamed of?"
