With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
November 09, 2009 - 5:15 p.m. Lena's gone. I'll recap her last day here. I did something I feel somewhat guilty about. I canceled class today. They build in make-up days so I shouldn't. It just made things much easier not having to go to school with Lena's luggage. We took things easy today. We skipped breakfast and went for an early lunch at my favorite restaurant, Uncle Jack's in Bayside, my old neighborhood. Things started off well when I found a free parking spot. I can't afford Uncle Jack's at night but the lunch menu is reasonable. I always get the same thing, the filet mignon sandwich on garlic bread. It is my favorite meal at any restaurant. They make it perfectly. The price went up $2 but that's the first time they raised it since I discovered the place. Not only is the food great but so is the service. I even had a great discussion with the waiter on whether Derek Jeter is the greatest shortstop of the last 40 years. He is. It would have been A-Rod but he switched to short. I'm a Met fan but you can't deny the truth. After dinner we got back to my house and got Lena's things. She is moving back from Israel so she had a lot of stuff squeezed into a backpack that weighs as much as an elephant and a suitcase that weighs as much as a full grown apatosaurus. The subway stop by my house has no elevator so we walked to the next one that does. That's almost a mile away. I thought it was easier than trying to lug the suitcase down several flights of steps. I was right. I just realized I didn't walk the shortest route. Oh well. We took the subway to Penn station where I was able to take a combination of elevators and escalators up to the AMTRAK waiting area. Lena walked the direct route and got her ticket. We got there exactly when Lena wanted to. I'm a master commuter (that's there as ironic foreshadowing). Lena got off fine and is now on a train back to Virginia. On the way home I got on the E train and read then slept. As always I regained my senses right before my station. One problem. The E train doesn't stop at my station. I put my book away at Union Turnpike to get ready but I should have gotten off the train then and switched to the F. It was no big deal. I just took the next E train back, it arrived seconds after mine pulled in, and went back to Union tpke and this time switched to the F. So now I have to get used to living by myself again. I think I'll start by trying out my new French press and have some coffee. I was going to have last night's leftovers today but as that's steak and we had steak for lunch I'll save it for tomorrow. I think I'll have breakfast for dinner.
