With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2002-08-01 - 4:35 p.m. Last night I went to my first Broadway play in a year. It might have been two. Then Alison took me to see Ms Saigon. This year Bad Carey took me to see Hairspray, the musical based on the John Waters film of the same name. I didn't know what to expect but I really liked it. The songs aren't memorable but the energy level is great and the show is funny and meaningful. It reminds me of a Deirdre Flint song. It is the triumph of someone who doesn't meet society's usual standards of beauty and background. I am pretty sure that it would go over great with the Frühead crowd. It had something of the feel of Little Shop of Horrors The show is in previews now but it got a big write up in the Times a couple of Sundays ago and the sales are going through the roof. I have never seen such a big line for people buying tickets the day of the show before. For many people the big draw is Harvey Fierstein. For us it was Laura Bell Bundy as Amber Von Tussle the antagonist. We had seen her in the 1991 Off-Broadway hit Ruthless. She was 11 then and we've been following her career ever since. We've seen her in a number of films and in Gypsy. You may have heard me mention her because of her understudies in Ruthless, Brittney Spears and Natalie Portman. Imagine how she must feel, her understudies are megastars and the best that she has done till now was being a regular on Guiding Light for a year. Tonight I'm seeing North by Northwest with a concert by Sex Mob. They are doing Movie Music A to B. I heard them interviewed on WFUV and they are great. I'm going with Lisa, Carolyn and Fred. I wanted to write more but I have to leave for the show now. Think of some philosophical insights and credit them to me.
