I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Falcon Ridge Moments

It's almost 1 AM and I'm exhausted and the internet hog is making doing anything online difficult but I have to post something. I am back from Falcon Ridge. I can't say home from Falcon Ridge as Falcon Ridge is home. Carl Wallenda said being on the wire is life, the rest is waiting. It's not quite true of Falcon Ridge but it can seem like that when you are there. Returning to the outside world is not waking from a dream but falling asleep.

Today I'm keeping it short; I'm not going to give an accounting of my time at the festival but simply give some quintessential Falcon Ridge moments.

Brianne and I getting to the Budgiedome camp just before the rain and Steve and Paul helping us get our tents up in record time.

A stranger coming in and bringing me a tray of chocolate peanut butter cupcakes and bacon chocolate frosted yellow cupcakes with a caramel filling. Her name is Mel and we met on the Falcon Ridge Group on Facebook.

Joe and Emily telling Bobtown that "Wagon Wheel" was the favorite song of their five year old daughter Katie and Bobtown playing it for her in the Budgiedome with just friends and family around.

Katie singing Fred Eaglesmith's "I'm Wilder than Her at the Coffee House Village (name to soon be changed)

Dar "Iowa" need I say more?

Making Brianne cry by saying something during the Kennedys' set and her making me cry by crying.

Running into Aaron Nathans at 4 AM on Saturday night/Sunday morning

Catherine running off with Susan Werne while singing "I got the Last Good One" with Jay during Rolling in the Aisles

Mike and Dave, Half of Moxy Frvous singing "Killer Tents' at Falcon Ridge 14 years after Frvous first did with updated lyrics.

Mike and Dave describing themselves as half of Da Vinci's Notebook

Spuyten Duyvil on the tiny Budgiedome stage with Pesky J. Nixon Brian & Katie, Eric Lee, and people I'm blanking on at the moment. Was Anthony there? I think that was the previous night with Pesky.

Everyone trying very hard to remember the lyrics to songs at the Coffee House Village (formerly the Steeple Tent) song circle.

Being with people I at that song circle that I was comfortable enough with to sing an original song.

Vance Gilbert ranting on the Gospel Wake Up Stage that Mike and Dave think a song about raccoons is gospel.

Thousands of people standing while the Kennedys sang Stand

Proposing to Susan Werner

Proposing to Sarah and planning our refrigerator made of bacon so we can just peel a strip of when we want one. Her boyfriend was standing right there. Hey bacon is bacon.

Getting caught in a summer squall at the Loozer's Lounge and having a kid, a Paul in training, looking at his phone and saying "I just checked the RADAR and this is an isolated cell and it should be over soon."

Not being able to walk ten feet without running into someone I love.

Technically it was before the festival but Honor serenading Brianne and me with a new song on her uke on the ride up.

Technically it was after the festival but spending the entire ride home with Lori making fun of Jian and knowing we didn't have nearly enough time for it.
