With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
September 25, 2009 - 5:17 p.m. I took a zillion photos yesterday so that should be my entry but I haven't even downloaded them yet. So now I have to actually write. Today is the third anniversary of my mother's death. I'm not going to dwell on it or write about it. That wasn't how I was brought up. I think of today as Carey's birthday. So that's another thing I'm not going to write about. So what will I write about? I have a student in my office, the same one that came last time. I bet she'll be the only one to come all semester. It does mean I won't really have time to write much now. So things are decided for me. I didn't get a chance to come close to finishing this at school so I'm doing it now that I'm home. I keep worrying that people will think I'm sick if I miss an entry. If I miss one during the week it's because I didn't have time to write during my break. Maybe I should start updating in the evenings again. Now back to the entry. Everything after the next two paragraphs was written at home. Yesterday Leah called and we talked for an hour. Leah and I used to talk to each other almost every day. I miss that. It was great talking to her. She can always hold my attention. After she talked I went for my walk. I drove up to Fort Totten. The historic battery was supposed to be open, it wasn't. I have to find out what is going on. There is no one there to ask. The Fort is a weird place. I was a historic fort from the early 19th century designed to protect New York for naval attack. It was maintained as a military base since then. When I was a kid they had Nike anti-aircraft missiles there to protect the City from Soviet bombers. Now the fort is shared by the Army reserves and the City of New York which uses it to train fireman and police and as a public park. Does anyone know any other place like that in the world? What I love that that hardly anyone uses the park so I have it to myself. I love exploring all the nooks and crannies. After the fort I did my walk along Little Bay Park by the Throgs Neck Bridge. I kept walking after I ran out of park and explored a neighborhood I've never been to. Do any of my gentle readers take urban hikes? I spent about two and a half hour walking. It's good exercise and mental stimulation at the same time. For dinner I had barbecue chicken thighs and French fries. I'm going to brag. I make chicken perfectly. It's never too dry. If only had an outdoor grill again. Tonight I'm making Buffalo wings. Then I'm off to see A.J. Roach and Anthony da Costa at the Postcrypt Coffeehouse. It's going to be a late night. There is no fast way of getting there. I wanted to write more but I have to get dinner ready. I'll have to save the philosophy till tomorrow.
