With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

These are a few of my favorite things

I had a busier day today than I expected. Leah IMed me this morning and told me that she stayed an extra night in Montclair. That meant I got to see her again today. That was as easy to do as it might seem thanks to the people working the disinformation booths at the Port Authority. I asked at the booth at the entrance where I’d meet someone coming in on a de Camp bus from Upper Montclair. She told me, “the onloading platform.” When I asked where that was she said, go to the back then downstairs. When I got there, there were no signs and no stairway down. I asked someone there where it was and he told me it was downstairs in the other building. I decided to cross through the basement. On the way I passed another information booth and asked where I’d meet the bus and he said, Gates 409-415. When I told him that someone had told me the onloading platform he said, “No they are always at gates 409-415. I went up there and saw that was the gates that the bus leaves from. Leah wasn’t there so I called her, my very first call on my cell phone. She was still in the tunnel. I still wasn’t sure I was in the right place so I told her to call me if I wasn’t there when she got out. A few minutes later I got a call. She said she was near the bowling alley so I met her there. She was let off on the third floor, not the fourth. Everything the information people told me was wrong.

When we finally got together we made our plans for the day. First thing we did was go down to the Container Store to surprise Gella. Keeping in my tradition Leah got a shoebox and went to have Gella check her out. The best laid schemes of mice o’ men gang aft aglay. In other words things didn’t work out the way we planned. Gella went off on break just as Leah went to check out so she let out a hearty “Gella Solomon” as she checked out with somebody else and Gella heard her. This actually worked out better than we planned because Gella was able to join us for lunch around the corner at Petite Abeille. They had quiche but I didn’t since real men don’t eat quiche. I had a waffle. More importantly I had the company of two of my favorite people.

After lunch Gella went back to work Leah and I went up to Colony Records to buy a karaoke (I am very proud of myself for spelling karaoke correctly the first shot) CD of Hairspray for Leah.

We walked back to the Port Authority with excellent timing to make the 3:00 bus back to Atlantic City. I really wish I could see Leah more.

I then had four hours to kill till The Kennedys show. I decided to not go to the movies but instead go to my office which is both air conditioned and free. That gave me an opportunity to talk to the Wonderful LORi on the school’s dime. I got to play treasure hunt with her as we searched online for contact information for the elusive David Lipson. We somehow managed to fill another couple of hours talking. Enough time that before we knew it, it was too late to call Mr. Lipson. His loss was my gain.

The Kennedys were great but once again I was disappointed with the turnout. They did start off with John Brown an obscure early Dylan song that they unearthed and had told me about. I’ve been bugging them to play it for me all month.

When the time came to pass the tip bucket I noticed that sitting behind me was Good Jay. I have mentioned him before, does anyone remember the context? He is a fan, perhaps the biggest fan, of Renaissance, the first band I ever followed. I have not seen him in years, not since the last time I saw Annie Haslam perform. He asked me if I knew where he discovered the Kennedys and I said sure, they opened for Annie at the Bottom line. That was the second time that I had seen them. I was just talking to them about Renaissance and Annie last week.

So I had a good day, I saw lots of good people and talked to one more on the phone. I was nice and happy. I of course couldn’t let well enough alone and got myself depressed when I got home. That was soon banished though by watching one of my favorite Doctor Who serials, The Horns of Nimon. It had quite a few good quotes. All quotes are by the Fourth Doctor unless otherwise noted:

I wonder what it would be like to be crushed to death in a singularity?

Have you ever noticed how people’s intellectual curiosity declines sharply the moment they start to waving guns about?

Why don’t you give me the gun then I can keep an eye on myself so I don’t get up to any funny business.

Sometimes I think I’m wasted just rushing around the universe saving planets from destruction. With a talent like mine I could have been a great slow bowler [a cricket pitcher for those few of you who aren’t ardent cricket fans].

Teka: What’s happening?

Seth: I don’t know.

Teka: Why don’t you know?

Seth: I don’t know.

As I suspected I thought of things to write about tonight when I have filled two pages already. I’ll try and save the ideas for a rainy day. I’ll actually put them in my folder of diary ideas that I haven’t added to in over a year.

I just realized that there is a secret reference to Melissa in this entry. Can anyone find it? Melissa you can answer if you wish.
