With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

The Hojo’s Lounge experience is a bit different than I’m used to. You hear the clinking of plates, the blender, and the microwave that plays in A-flat all through the show. Every once in a while a really loud car horn from the street will chime in. Despite all that it works for DTS. I could see Hedwig playing there too. At a quarter to ten the place is empty, a few minutes later there isn’t a seat in the house? What accounts for this miracle? Broadway shows let out. The shows start at 10 to take advantage of this. The problem is that they end way after midnight and that’s late for a weeknight. They are talking about moving the show up an hour next time. If you want to go to the next show let me know. It’s always fun.
P & M are a hard act to characterize. A guy with a guitar and ukulele and a woman singer look like they should be a folk act. They really aren’t though. Neither the lyrics nor music are folkie. They don’t have the usual instrumental accoutrements but they are really close to being neuromusic. Ken’s writing and playing and Danielle’s singing come from a totally different place than folk music. They have more in common with Piñataland and Radiant Pig, than Woody Guthrie or Dar Williams. One strange effect that the music has on me is that often think of the songs as being funny even though for the most part they are very depressing. There is a sense of irony pervading the lyrics. Go to their website and read the biography section, you’ll get a taste of what I mean. There were more guys at Meow Mix than I’ve ever seen. If it wasn’t for the two girls making out right in front of me you’d have never known it was a lesbian bar. It was also one of the rudest crowds I’ve heard in a while, people were talking all throughout the set. They really need to install cones of silence at venues. When someone talks the dome descends over them and no one else can hear them. I was going to save money tonight and not go the Loser’s Lounge. I might have to change those plans. John IMed me last night and told me the show was great and filled with surprises. If it isn’t sold out I think I’ll have to go.
