With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

End of the Drive

The WFUV fund drive is over. Lets see if I can get back to updating every morning.

Yesterday Nora and I did a short shift, just the three hours of John Platt's City Folk Sunday Breakfast. That is always lots of fun. There is a regular crew that I've known for years. There are a lot more volunteers and a lot less staff than during the week. That means I end up with more responsibility, something I like.

The drive is now over; the station made its goal.

I took some pictures during the week, I'll post them when I get a chance this week.

After the show I drove Nora home and went straight to the LIRR to catch a train to my first Met game of the year. The weather was absolutely perfect and they were playing the Braves with first place in the division on the line. The game was a sellout. I just missed the 11:52 train, which was unfortunate. The 12:22 was late and very crowded. It took me so long to get into the Stadium because of the large crowd that I just reached my seat in time for the first pitch.

The game was great but the Mets lost. They are now a half game out of first. I'm not really worried; they are really good. I of course had lots of fun with Alan and Larry. There is really nothing like sitting outside under blue skies watching the greatest game every invented with good friends.

My tech math class did poorly on their test two so I'm offering them the same chance I gave my calculus class. I'm letting them do it as a take-home test. I need to spend some time explaining what is expected of them on the questions. I really don't get it. We do a million homework problems and they don’t' pick up what is being asked on the questions. Part of the problem is they don't like having answers that aren't numbers. The idea of giving the answer as the square root of two bothers them. My friend Howard was grading his high school math test at the drive and complained to me about exactly the same thing. They want their calculators to give them the answer.

There has been so much going on in the world that I haven't written about. I wonder if I'll be able to catch up. I'm trying to figure out what to say about the Supreme Court decision on "partial birth abortion."

It is of course the perfect subject for the pro-life crowd. It is a rare procedure and the description is gruesome. That obscures the real issue. For the first time the court put the life of the fetus about the health of the mother. They hid it under the fig leaf of saying it is never necessary for the health of the mother. They are of course not qualified to make that decision, doctors are and doctors say it is often necessary. Is this going to be letting the camels nose in the tent? That is the danger. Of course there are things we can do. We can make sure that the next president is someone that will nominate judges that support a woman's right to choose and Senators that won't approve those that don't. I think in the long run things will work out but there might be some bumpy times in the mean time.
