With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
November 19, 2005 - 12:41 a.m. Did anything memorable happen today? Not that I can remember. Actually something did happen, one of my students gave me a bootleg CD of a 1969 Bob Dylan concert. He asked me out of the blue if I liked Dylan last week and this week he gave me the CD. I am not thinking of it as an inappropriate gift, he is getting an A anyway. He was just excited to find someone else that shared his love of Dylan. I got excited too. It is so rare to find a student with good taste. Actually the student that sits next to him also has great taste and is a real music maven. We started talking about it because he often wears a Ramones t-shirt. He actually listens to LPs. Isn’t it amazing, I actually have cool students. There is a downside to it, they bring up discipline issues. They act like I did when I was a student, they talk to each other quietly during class often about the lesson. That doesn’t bother me but I worry that it lets other students think that they don’t have to pay attention. I have actually discussed the issue with them and they agreed to keep it down, which they have. I have written before about being reluctant to talk to my friends for fear of rejection. That isn’t the only reason I have for not talking though. Sometimes I really want to talk but I don’t have anything to say to the friend I see online. A strange thing is that the more you talk to a person, the more you have to say to him or her. When you haven’t talked to someone in months it is hard to talk about some minutiae that interests you at the moment. There are some people that I can always talk to. There aren’t very many of them, a handful over the course of my life. That led me to the realization that love is being able to talk to someone even when you have nothing to say. Part of me wants to responds “Love isn’t a slogan that you can fit on a bumper sticker.” Hey that would make a good bumper sticker.
