With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
September 27, 2005 - 12:27 a.m. As I suspected I didn’t teach anything new today. I assigned word problems for homework and we spent the entire class going over them. We didn’t finish. It is amazing how difficult students find them. I point out how we are just doing the same problem over and over again and they don’t see it. I think for some of them the problem is that they aren’t good readers. I was tempted to say that was the problem for all of them but thinking about it i know it isn’t so. I am sure that some of my really intelligent friends who have trouble in math would have trouble with word problems. Nobody who is bad at math gets them right no matter how smart they are. I have always felt that students should start training in word problems as soon as they can read and do basic arithmetic. My father used to give them to me for fun. Yes I was a nerd. I realized that he did one of my tricks to. He would make the problem something I was interested in. Something like: If the Museum of Natural History was 12 miles away and you walked there at 4 miles an hour how long would the trip take? I was not able to make a quick getaway after school. I had to talk to several of my students after class. I like leaving as soon as possible so I can make the 2:19 train home. Not only do I get home a half hour earlier but I get to listen to the end of the Al Franken show on Air America on the trip home on the LIRR. That is most important on Fridays when Al’s show features the Peabody award winning game show, Wait, Wait, Don’t Lie to Me! After school I went to visit my mother. I found out that they changed her room again, for the second time. That meant I had to call everybody and give them the new phone number. I got to talk to her doctor. Guess what? She didn’t have an infection after all. Her culture was contaminated. That happens sometimes. In other words there was no need for her to go to the hospital. On the bright side this might be her ticket into rehab. Her doctor is trying to get her into it. It is covered by her insurance after a hospital visit. My sisters think it can help her. I’m not that sure it can. It will give me a break from home care. I had a phone call so I missed the beginning of the No Direction Home Martin Scorsese’s documentary on Bob Dylan. I recorded it so I’ll watch it later. Part 2 is tomorrow when I’ll be out seeing The Kennedys at WFUV. I’ll have to record that too. I might want to actually keep these tapes for posterity. I get to sleep late tomorrow but that isn’t making me any less tired tonight. I better get to sleep. I’ll update tomorrow after the concert.
