With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

This is my second update today, make sure you read the first one.
I went to the gastroenterologist and had my colonoscopy. This was the first time I had it in Dr Goldenberg's office. He has an anesthesiologist in attendance. I must have been more heavily sedated than usual; I fell asleep during the procedure. I didn't want to be. I like watching it on the monitor. The results were pretty good. He didn't find any cancer or polyps even. My colon was perfect. My small intestine was showing the effects of a Crohn's disease attack. I'm switching back to taking 6MP. That's an immunosuppressant that is primarily used to treat leukemia. I'll probably be on it the rest of my life. It doesn't have severe side effects so I should be OK.
I'm going to need an upper GI series and probably a new test where I swallow a miniature TV camera. These are all just precautionary though. I'm not too worried.
A little PSA: If you are over 50 or over 40 and have a family history of colon cancer you should get scoped. The prep is the only bad part, the actually procedure is nothing. Colon cancer is almost 100% treatable if you catch it early. There is no good excuse not to get scoped. If you live in Queens or on Long Island write me and I'll give you the number of my doctor, he's the best.
Lots of things to get me mad in the paper today. Israel targeted a multifamily house with rockets where a leader of Hamas lives. They have every right to try and defend themselves and to make preemptive attacks against those who plan the suicide bombings. The problem here was that lots of innocent people lived in the same building. Children were killed in the attack and they knew that would happen before they attacked. There are always going to be mistakes made and civilians will accidentally get killed but this was different. They knew they'd be killing children and attacked anyway. The suicide bombers have been deliberately targeting children from the beginning. That doesn't mean that Israel has to sink to the same level.
Bush has ordered the cessation of funding to the UN Population Fund. Colin Powell supports the fund but the ultra-rightists that Dubya is beholden to object to it because of abortion. They say that the money is used to fund forced abortions in China even though there is no evidence that it does. They just are against abortions in all circumstances. The irony of the situation is that most of the money is used on things that prevent women from getting pregnant in the first place so the fund actually reduces the number of abortions performed. This logic is lost on the ultra-right. People seem to have forgotten but the pill was illegal in parts of this country till the mid sixties. The ultra-right fought hard to keep it illegal.
The Justice Department headed by noted fascist Ashcroft has changed its official position on the second amendment. The Supreme Court has ruled that the right to bear arms is a right of the states to form militias. The justice department has caved in to the gun lobby and said that it was an individual right. This is making the enforcement of gun laws difficult and has made the Justice department argue diametrically opposed views in difference circumstances.
