With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
October 01, 2007 - 12:20 p.m. I went to the last regular season Met game of the season. The sad part is that I had no real to put in "regular season" in that sentence. The Mets lost. They are not playing in the post season. This was one of the greatest chokes in sports history. No baseball team had ever blown a seven game lead so late in the season. I have never had such a disappointing sports season. I had such high expectations. Yes I had doubts before the season started but they answered my questions and should have won. This doesn't mean they are a bad team. It doesn't mean that they won't come back and win it all next year. It just means they won less games than the Phillies this season. I took some nice pictures from before the game when hopes were still running high. I'll post them tomorrow. As for the Batnoses, they couldn't overcome a spate of late season injuries and came in second. If Jeremy Bonderman had stayed healthy we would have won. That is part of the breaks of the game. Like the Mets I am optimistic for next season. There was one bright spot. At the Met game ours was the lucky session that won free packages of Bubba Burgers. Alan does eat meat I got his. We also won t-shirts. I'll be eating a lot of burgers. I hope they are good. Should I be brave and try the jalapeño burgers? What they actually gave us was a coupon we can redeem at the supermarket for our choice of 2 lbs box of burgers. Larry and I were made unreasonably happy by this. You'll never go broke overestimating the stupidity and laziness of students. On the first day of class I handed out a sheet with all my contact info and a guide to how the course will be run. I handed it out again to the newcomers every day the first couple of weeks. They were told to put it someplace safe and that they needed to contact me if they were going to miss a test or a quiz. Each time I mentioned that at some point in the semester I'd give a quiz that would consist of them bringing in the sheet and copying the contact info. Today in class I announced that the quiz was on Wednesday. One student was totally flabbergasted. He had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. He asked when I gave it out. I told him that it was the first day and every day the first two weeks. He had absolutely no memory of it. Now I can see forgetting about it and saying, "Damn I can't remember where I put it." But not remembering something that the teacher emphasized so much at all? He must have not been paying any attention when I said it. I just checked he has been to every class since the first so why was he asking when I announced it. He knows he was there. Maybe he doesn't. Maybe he is just totally clueless. I have to run and eat lunch so that's it for this entry. Wait Till Next Year! The Batnoses finished the season in second place 5 points out of first. Give them a big hand for a valient effort.
