With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
July 13, 2003 - 7:32 p.m. I didn’t update last night, did you feel there was a gaping hole in your life? I’ll have to try to fill it now. I think I had a good excuse, I didn’t get home till after 2 AM and I didn’t have time to update this morning. Last night I went to see DVN at the Bottom Line, my home away from home. I got there early enough to get some dinner first, I went to Peanut Butter and Company, it was a day for indulging myself. I even had the Elvis, Peanut Butter, honey, bananas, and bacon on whole wheat. When I got to the Bottom Line there was still nobody waiting on the line so I went to get something to drink. When I got back I saw Chris, we were the first two people there. In an unusual move they actually let us in early, they most have had an easy sound check. I took my usual seat up front and saved one for Melissa who was meeting me there. There was no need to have gotten there early, it was a late arriving crowd and it wasn’t a sellout. We did have the luxury of having empty seats next to us for our stuff. DVN put on their usual great show and played The Sea Captain’s Wife’s Lament a new song that I hadn’t heard yet. The big news is that they actually called on me for Request-O-Rama. This despite the fact that they added not calling on stalkers (e.g. Me and my friends) to the list of rules. I accomplished this by the simple expedient of being shameless. It is my birthday in a week and Melissa and I took advantage of this. We made signs. Mine said; IT’S MY BIRTHDAY SOON. CALL ON ME Melissa’s said the same thing except it said “him” instead of “me.” As I think I might have said here when we go see DVN we act like contestants on Let’s Make a Deal. It all started when Carey and I gave them the army men. Melissa have idea for the next one, Frosted Jews. Be afraid, be very afraid. I forgot to mention, the song I requested was I Wanna Be Sedated. Very appropriate as we weren’t far from where Joey Ramone lived. The show was actually a co-bill with the incredible Cheryl Wheeler. I’ve seen her before but only in festivals. She is very reminiscent of Christine Lavin. She talks even more though. The more she talked the more I could see that she was an Us. She’d fit in so well with my friends. Between the shows we were able to talk to the madman. They wished me a happy birthday and I reminded them to play the Budgiedome. The second show was not nearly as well attended, it was very small crowd. The show was more ADD and a bit crazier if possible. Those are good things. One highlight was when someone requested Un Bel Di. Carey and I had discussed requesting that in the past. What I really loved is that Skippy didn’t know it and after vamping for a bit started singing the words “un bel di” to the tune of Ob-la-di Ob-la-da, exactly what I did when Carey and I talked about it. After the second show I drove Melissa and her friend Liz home then headed home myself. It was a really late night but well worth it. Today I went to the Met game. They actually won, ending a six game losing streak. I won my game with Alan too. I was going to go out tonight and see GrooveLily along with Maggie and Suzzy Roche in Jersey but decided the drive was just too daunting. I need a break.
