With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
December 01, 2006 - 11:55 a.m. I am not a happy camper. I was up to after 1 AM last night grading the tests. This morning a student came up to me and was unhappy with her grade. First she argued that she should get more credit on one question. Then she came to my office and wanted to know if she could do extra work to improve her grade. I told her, “no.” That the grades are based on the tests and that I don’t give “extra credit.” That it wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the class and more importantly it doesn’t show that she learned the material. I told her to put the extra work into studying and do well on the final. She kept hammering at me to give her a chance to do work for extra credit. I didn’t relent and I told her to stop asking. I didn’t lose my temper but I got pretty icy. As TMBG says, “No means no.” That is not my biggest problem with a student. One student in my late class cheated. It is clear that she just copied the entire test from the student next to her. I wish I had a scanner, I’d show you how I know. Copying is always clear when you copy an entire test. I am thinking of offering her a plea bargain. If she admits what she did in writing I’ll just fail her in the class and not report her to the school. I need the written confession to protect myself in case she later complains about my failing her. Maybe I’ll talk to the dean responsible for this kind of thing and see what he or she has to say. Tonight I’m going to see Zoe Lewis with Aubrey and his wife Diana and maybe their oldest son. I had emailed Aubrey a month ago about it and he never got back to me. I called him on Sunday and asked him again and he said that he had to ask Diana about it. I hadn’t heard from him by Tuesday so I called Diana. As I suspected he hadn’t asked her. He just won’t commit his time in advance. She committed his time for him. Wow this is a whiney entry. Don’t I have anything good to write about? Nope. The people I wanted to play my house concert can’t make it. I have to try and book somebody else now on short notice. OK here is something positive. I’d like to put up a Festivus pole. I just want a plain aluminum poll that will stay vertical somehow. Any ideas how I can do that on the cheap? Someone sells them but they are like $50, that is ridiculous and contrary to the spirit of Festivus. It really should be something salvaged and not used for its original purpose.
