With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.

Carrolling to a Cadence

I have lots of catching up to do and not much time to write. That means I'll probably forget all the cool stuff.

Saturday night I went to see Sloan Wainwright and Cadence Carroll at the Hillside Café in Nutley NJ. I hadn't finished grading my tests so I brought them with me. As so often happens I was the first person there and doors weren't opened yet. I sat down to do my grading and discovered that I had forgotten my red pen. Sloan went by then and stopped to talk and I told her what happened. Know what she did? She scrounged a red pen for me from the office. Now that's a full-service performer.

When they let us in I took my usual seat down front. The first thing I did was say hi to Cadence and got my hug. Cadence gives really good hug. I was then good and got down to grading. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the late class did quite a bit better than the early class. The mean grade in the early class was 59 and in the late class, 67. Neither is very good of course.

People seemed to be very amused watching me grade before the show started.

Cadence is the one that got me to go to Jersey to see a show when I had so much work to do. She rarely gives solo performances anymore and I haven't seen her in over a year. I couldn't miss her. She didn't do that many songs but included my two favorites Evolve and Have Faith. Those aren't good, they are great songs. I had a lot more to write about Cady but I'll keep it short. The world would be a lot better off if there were more people like her.

I see I am not going to come close to finishing this before class. I guess that means I'll come back afterwards and not go straight home. I'll see you then.

Change in plans. I went home. I took a nap. I talked to Lena. I had dinner. I did laundry. In other words now it is late and I'm finally getting back to writing.

One good thing about waiting; I now have my pictures uploaded so now I can illustrate the entry.

Who can turn the world on with her smile?

Can you make out what is says on Cadence's shirt?

It's time for your closeup Ms. Carroll

Cadence acts as Sloan's ladder

Sloan is recovering from a snapped Achilles tendon so Cadence had to help her onto the stage.

Time for your close-up Mr. Djembe

Sloan is growing on me. I've seen her twice in the last month and I'm learning to really appreciate her. I always appreciated her amazing contralto voice but I'm appreciating her songs and her singing more and more. She also has great taste in covers. And of course she found me a red pen.

After the show I of course stayed late and hung around with Cady and Sloan. I finally go the never up to tell Cadence something Carey and I thought from the very first time we saw her. The chorus of Evolve is:

As we revolve
We will evolve
To a pla-a-ace of love

We don't revolve as individuals; it is the earth that is revolving. We thought the words should be:

As we revolve
We will evolve
To a pla-a-net of love

Cady was of course quite gracious. Not that she's changing the way she sings it.

On Sunday Roy and I played in the District 24 Flight B Finals for the North American Pairs. The top pair gets $700 a piece and the right to play in the North American Pairs game at the North American Bridge Championship in Detroit.

The second place pair gets $350 and the right to play.

The third place pair get to play.

The fourth place pair gets to play if one of the top three doesn't play.

There were two session and two sections in each session. In the first session we can in third in our direction in our session. That' not too bad. We were in 20th place overall.

During the break we went out for dinner at an Italian restaurant/pizzeria that Roy likes. Our timing was perfect, we got back just in time for the second session.

In the second session we came in fourth place in our direction. I'm not sure where we ended up in the overalls as they only listed the top 7. My guess is we can in somewhere between 10th and 12th. We were very consistant, a 53.88% game the first session and a 53.1% game in the second. I have one of the lowest masterpoint totals in the field and Roy is actually a flight C player so this was quite respectable. We are really good enough to win the whole thing. Maybe next year.

The one problem is that the even ran pretty long and I had to miss not only Rod Picott at 6 PM but Deni Bonet at 8PM. What I really missed was having dinner with Rod after his show. He's doing a few more shows in the area so Maybe we'll do it after one of the others.

When I got home I finished my grading. It started off great but then I started thinking too much like my students that is always painful. You can see their disorganization on the test papers.

Today's classes went pretty well. I gave them the encouraging it isn't too late to turn things around speech and they seemed to appreciate it. Now I know most of them will go right back to not doing their homework but if just a few do start doing it I'll feel I accomplished something. At least the classes still liked me. They laughed at my jokes today.

I think I'll let this entry die a natural death now.

No I won't. I forgot something.

On Saturday I spoke to LORi for the first time in two months. That's the longest we've gone without talking in years. She's been traveling all over the place. I'm going down to see Pat Wictor at the Lansdowne Folk Club on Thursday and LORi suggested that I drive down after school on Wednesday. Now I'll have an easier day on Thursday, only the long drive home; and I get all day to play with Lori. That's a much better plan than driving back and forth the same day.

So now that I’m on page five I'm really ending this entry.
