With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

Shave and a Haircut/ Two Bits

First off I forgot to mention something I did on Tuesday. I accomplished even more than I said; I got a haircut. I hate getting haircuts. I always have. I just don’t like having to sit still in a chair while somebody does something to my body.

I tried something different with my hair. I asked her to comb it straight back, no part. I have had part in my hair since I’ve had hair. It was a middle part for a while but usually a side part. The experiment didn’t work. The hair on the top of my head wants to stand straight up when I comb in back. It will only go over to the side. Oh well, so much for change. I just realized that I comb my hair now just like my father did. So much for being a hippie.

School went OK, I wouldn’t say great. Most of the students aren’t very enthusiastic. There are a few though. After class a student that showed up for the first time said that he didn’t belong in the class; that he took calculus in high school. I told him to speak to the department and to take the placement exam again. He obviously didn’t master the material, as he couldn’t even place into taking calculus.

My mother was able to stay awake when I visited but she wasn’t exactly lucid. She was telling me all about a wedding she went to the day before. She made this story up out of whole cloth. She told Sue about the wedding earlier in the week. There was a difference though. This time it was the wedding was of the daughter of the woman she told my sister got married.

Today is a bit hectic. I had to get up early because I had a cleaning crew due in at 8:30. They didn’t arrive till 9:45. This is a real problem as I also have a plumber in and right now I have no water. He ran out to get the part he needs for my shower.

I called someone I hadn’t spoken to in ages on Monday. She wasn’t home and I left a message. She never called me back. I always have trouble dealing with things like that. I’ll try again this weekend. I’ll be out the next few nights. Tonight is bridge with Roy and tomorrow I’m seeing David Massengill.

I planned out a long retrospective entry. It looks like I’m not going to write it now. There are things I need to say but can’t.

Tonight’s bridge game is a special event played nationwide. I’m feeling a bid guilty because I made a reservation for us to play in a weaker game than the Franklin where we usually play. I have to reasons to feel guilty. The first is that I’m friends with the owner of the Franklin and I’m spending our money someplace else. The second is that I am doing it so that we have a better chance to win. This isn’t major guilt on the JMGS.
