With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
April 30, 2007 - 11:21 a.m. I finished grading the take-home test. The average grade was 72. Can you believe that? There were only two grades in the nineties. In the beginning of the semester I found that not one student had done his or her homework. I was prepared for disaster then and disaster is what the class became. I have been mentally preparing myself to talk to them today. I want to avoid all sarcasm. I might just go over the test without attempting anything to set them right. I might tell them that I warned them in the beginning that they needed to do the work to pass the class and they didn't heed my warnings so I hope they at least learned the lesson for the future. Last night I went to see The Four Bitchin' Babes at B.B. Kings. I dislike the club so it takes a lot to get me there. I went because I haven't seen the Babes in about 5 years and i haven't seen Deirdre Flint since she played my house and I wanted to talk to her. I got there before doors and was about the tenth person on the line. When I got in I found I had to go to the box office to pick up the ticket I ordered online. I had asked outside if I had to do that and was told I didn't. While I was getting my ticket another dozen people went in. I was afraid I wouldn't get a good seat but I did. I sat exactly where I wanted, at a table next to the stage right in front of Deirdre's mic. I used the time before the show started to finish grading my tests. I wonder how many tests I've graded at venues over the years. It has been quite a few. At least I put them away when the show started. The Babes were started in the early nineties by Christine Lavin. The other original Babes were Patty Larkin, Megan McDonough, and Sally Fingerette. Patty was soon replaced by Julie Gold. Julie was replaced by Debbie Smith. Christine was followed by Camille West. Then Camille by Deirdre. The first time Carey and I saw Deirdre at FRFF we compared her to Christine. I was talking her up to Christine for years. Now she is a Chris's successor in the Babes. Oh yes; there was one more lineup change. Megan was replaced by Nancy Moran. The currant lineup, audience left to right on the stage is, Debbie, Sally, Nancy, and Deirdre. I knew where to sit because Chris was always on the right so that's where I figured Deirdre would be. Bitchin' Babes shows are often described as slumber parties and that's how they feel. It is four friends getting together on the stage and having fun. The audience always has a good time when the performers are so obviously enjoying themselves. The show has evolved over the years. Originally Chris was the "funny one" and the other might have one funny song but were for the most part serious. Now they all highlight their funnier material. Not exclusively though, Debbie did an Aria from Carmen and they all did some serious material. Well all but Deirdre. She is still the official funny one. She is also their bass player. I'd say she was their Murray but I don't think Murray would use a heart-shaped bass. They mentioned that Christine was in the audience and she came onstage for one song. Julie Gold was sitting with Chris and came up for her hit, From a Distance, which they did as their encore. Some of you are going to be very jealous of Nancy. She was kissed by Davy Jones of the Monkees. The best part of her telling us that was that she added, "On the lips! Eat your heart out Marcia Brady!" Deirdre all of a sudden noticed me sitting in front of her about three or four songs into the show. I could see the recognition in her eyes. During the intermission I went over to talk to Chris and Julie. Chris's friend Flash was at their table. Flash remembered my name because she loves the juxtaposition of our names, Flash Gordon. I told Julie that I had just heard Nanci Griffith perform From a Distance on Friday at the show with Judy Collins. After the show I bought the Babes' new album and had them autograph it. Sally knew she knew me but didn't know from where. I thought I had met Nancy socially someplace but neither of could figure out where as she lives in Nashville. We decided that I was having a flashback from the future. I got a nice hug from Deirdre. We decided to not let it go so long before we see each other again. I'd like to write more but I have to stop at the hardware store before I go to school and have some spare keys made for the real estate agent. Think of something brilliant to finish this entry off with.
