When they burn books, they will, in the end, burn human beings
July 20, 2008 - 10:57 a.m. I am not dead. I am pressed for time. So just a quick recap of my birthday. As I think I told you Carey took me out for my birthday. He and Barbara took me out to see a matinee performance of The 39 Steps. I had heard it was the best adaptation of a film for Broadway ever. It is based on the classic Hitchcock film. The film is a spy drama with Hitch's usual doses of humor. The play is a broad comedy. The humor comes not from the characters, not from the plot, but from playing with the conventions and limitations of live theater. The four actors play a myriad of roles. Often one actor will play two parts in the same scene. At first he'd run off the stage and come right back on as another character. Then he'd just put a hat on or take it off to designate the different characters, and eventually one actor would have a conversation with himself. Part of the fun is catching the references to Hitchcock's other films. I am not giving anything away by telling you the best is North by Northwest. And yes as is tradition Hitchcock makes an appearance himself. I would have liked to have had dinner with Carey and Barbara after the show but they couldn't make it. I went home and got on the computer and took care of Budgiedome business. I'm still busy doing that. The two biggest acts, The Strangelings and Red Molly cancelled. Jack Hardy and David Massengill told me they wanted to play. That worked out well.
Last night I went to see Hungrytown aka Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson at a new venue for me Jalopy, in Brooklyn. It was a late show, scheduled for 9:30. When I got there I found out that somebody was on before them and he started closer to 10:00. They seemed to know everybody in the audience. I listened to them on the radio on the way there. They were Vin Scelsa's guest on Idiot's Delight. He raved over them. This was the first time I saw a full set by them. They deserve raves. I also love them as people. You can tell they are friends with The Kennedys. Anyone need a ticket? A few friends of mine are trying to sell theirs. OK now I really have to run.
