With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

Natal Day

So now I’m a year old, a year wiser, and a year madder. I know that the fact that the earth has revolved around the sun approximately an integral number of times since I was born is intrinsically totally meaningless but society puts a value on it and I go along with the charade.

I want to thank everyone that signed my card, frumsged me, or IMed me, or mentioned me on their blogs to wish me well. Some of you did more than one of those things.

I was very good and took advantage of the “send a thank you” feature on FHDC and thanked everyone that signed my card. I used to do that then stopped now I’m going to try and do it every year. I know I always liked to be acknowledged when I sign somebody else’s card. I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of acting the way that I’d like other people to act. It is that old Golden Rule thing again. It’s simple but it works.

Alison and Max came over this afternoon. We went out to lunch with my mother. We ate at my favorite, Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse . It is considered one of the top steakhouses in the City and it is five minutes from my house. It is too expensive to go there for dinner but lunch is reasonable. The last time there with my family I had the filet mignon sandwich on garlic bread and everyone who ordered something else got very jealous. It is just too good for words. This time we all ordered it. Not only is the food amazing but the waiter was very entertaining. He kept coming over and joking with us. He even gave us extras. Max and I were the only ones to order dessert but he game my mother a piece of the apple strudel gratis. He then handed her a bottle of their steak sauce which was voted the best in the city. They really know how to keep their customers happy.

The main course is my favorite meal out and the dessert matched it. I had a chocolate soufflé that was the platonic ideal of chocolate. It was really way to expensive for me to have on other occasions but for my birthday my mother got it for me. We were also celebrating Max’s birthday since he’ll be away for his next month. He ordered the Crème Brule, it was great, but when he tasted mine he was jealous. I told him the rule is when you eat at Uncle Jack’s order what I order.

After lunch we went back to the house and did the Sunday Times Crossword together. That actually didn’t help, I made more progress once they left and worked on it alone. That wasn’t as much fun though as doing it as a family.

Tonight I celebrated my birthday in what might be my most common fashion. I went to the Met game. Alan picked me up and drove me there. Usually we meet at the games since I like getting there earlier than he does. We didn’t have tickets for tonight so we had to go together. It was Alan’s treat so we got there a few minutes before the game started.

It looked like it was going to be a Met victory but the Marlins came back to win it in the ninth. I’m not really that upset. As I’ve said before I am afraid that the Mets will think they are good and mortgage the future on a fools hope that they can win this year. Yes they aren’t far out of first but they are still in fourth. They are playing at the top of their game and the Phillies at least are under-performing. Even if by some miracle the Mets could win the division they wouldn’t have a prayer in the post season.

I was right when I said that I wouldn’t get the thing that I most wanted for my birthday, my version of the Red Ryder bb gun with the compass in the stock. I’m a bit older than ten though so I can live with the disappointment. Ah but a man’s reach should exceed his grasp or what’s a heaven for?
