With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2002-07-22 - 1:52 p.m. I had a very busy. This entry will not do justice to it. J On Friday, my birthday, I met Carey at Penn Station. I never see her actually coming up from the tracks, I have to catch her under the departures board. After our usual hugs we started our odyssey. The first stop was 6th Street for Indian food. Every single building on 6th between 1st Ave and 2nd has an Indian restaurant. After eating we did our obligatory fun stuff shopping. Then it was off to the Bottom Line. When we got there Gella was waiting for us. She wasn't going to the show but Lisa had an extra ticket to FRFF for her. Carey and I went inside to get our tickets for the show and we noticed Lisa inside picking up the FRFF tickets. When all that was straightened out we went outside to wait on the line. We were at the front. It started to rain soon so we moved from the line to under the awning. Gella was quite delighted by the rain and went off to make her fortune. Alan Pepper, the owner of the Bottom Line, had mercy on us and let us in early when he saw how hard it was raining. Bad Carey and Barbara joined after about 45 minutes and after getting particularly bad waitress service, Lisa never got coffee, the show started. First up were Suzzy and Maggie Roche. They added some new material to their act that included some covers to classic sixties rock songs. Summertime was so much fun I always love them and this was no exception I never saw David Wilcox before but he was great. He is funny, he is sad, he is just great. After the show we hightailed it out to Old Bethpage to see Hedwig. We made good time and were able to stop and get something to eat at the same diner we ate at after the Vanderbilt TMBG show. I had some trepidations about the show but they were groundless. The show was great. We knew we were in for some fun times when there were people in the audience dressed like Hedwig and Yitzhak. The actor playing Hedwig was first rate and so was the band. Yitzhak sounded like a woman, which of course she is but she isn't supposed to sound like one. That's quibbling though, the show was lots of fun and you should see it if you can. We got home at 2:30 and pretty much collapsed. Saturday wasn't as structured. We originally were thinking of seeing a Broadway show but neither of us could afford that. Instead we saw the Gorilla Rep production of As You Like It at Battery Park. Before did some sightseeing. We started with a walk through Central Park including Belvedere Castle. Then we saw Ray's Copy Shop, made famous by Christine Lavin. We had Italian ices at not so original Ray's then went down to the Android's Dungeon to look at action figures. Carey was very good and didn't buy anything. For dinner we went to John's Pizza. We noticed that the traffic lights were out on the drive over there. All of lower Manhattan was blacked out. A transformer exploded. John's was still open though and we had some delicious brick oven pizza. We couldn't get ice cream from Cone's though. They closed because of the blackout. We made our way down to the Battery, which was quite crowded despite the blackout. The subways weren't running so it was a good thing we drove. We got some pretty good parking and took a ride on the Staten Island Ferry before the show. We found where the show was thanks to the big sign they drew on the sidewalk. I walked right past it of course, luckily Carey was with me. There were two guys sitting next to us before the show started that came straight from the Trio. I think it was Jonathan and Andrew. Carey wanted to take them home with us. Carey always wants to take cute guys home with us. The production was really funny like as all Gorilla Rep comedies are. They do them better than anyone. It was a very young cast and the director was an undergraduate. She did a very professional job. On Sunday we drove down to Maryland and picked up Carey's car at the train station. We then rested up at her house till we drove down to Annapolis. We did our usual chocolate shopping and ate at the Irish Pub. Then went to the Ram's Head to see DVN. We seemed to have telepathically programmed the entire show. Usually the audience doesn't get all their jokes, this time DVN didn't. They were telling our inside jokes not theirs. After the show someone from the DVN Yahoo group came over to us. When he asked if we were on the group and who we were he said, "You guys are famous, forget DVN, I want to talk to you. " This made us ridiculously happy of course. Bernie resurrected himself by calling on Carey during requestorama. As usual we spent a lot of time and effort working on what song to request and decided on Modern Major General by Gilbert and Sullivan. They did a Gregorian chant version of it. This morning Carey went to work and I drove home. I'm leaving in a little bit for the WFUV picnic. Then I have to prepare for my colonoscopy tomorrow. Fun times. J
