With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

Bern Baby Bern

I should be happier than I am. I had a good day yesterday. Last night I went to the Bottom Line with Lisa to see Dan Bern. What could be better than that? Phyllis and Heather showed and sat a few seats from us. We were right by the stage of course. Tip for Dan Bern fans, Do not sit right in front of the mic, you will get spit on all night. We were a couple of tables off to the side so we were safe. Dan gave one of his best shows. It was only the second time I saw him in his folkie sing-along mood. He did some of my old favorites and some new great songs. Dan is the one musician I know that has played songs I haven’t heard every show I’ve seen him at. I don’t think he has recorded a quarter of the songs that he has written. The crowds favorite new song was about what he’d do if he were president. I thought it was a bit obvious. My favorite was his song about the Giants losing last year’s world series. The Jints are his team and he loves Barry Bonds. Like me he wants Barry to get a ring before he retires. This is awful, I can’t remember his last song, which was a hymn as he put it. The refrain was something on the order of defeat Bush. He suggested that in support of the notion all women should shave. Eric Schwartz would have been happy.

After the show Phyllis, Lisa and I went over to Pomme Frites for Belgian fries. Heather couldn’t make it. Lisa had never been there before, which is surprising considering how often I’m in that neighborhood with her. We hung around there till I had to leave to make my train. I was thinking of driving in but I just couldn’t deal with the idea of looking for parking yesterday. I had so much trouble when Carey was here

Speaking of Carey I finally got to speak to her last night. We had not had a conversation, online or off, since she visited a few weeks ago. I think that’s the longest we’ve gone since we met.

Terry Pratchett can make me happy no matter what. Once again I laughed aloud reading. More than being funny he makes a connection with me. He sees the universe like I do.

I always share what I love so here’s a passage from Soul Music. One note when Death speaks everything he says in caps.

IT’S AN INTERESTING FACT THAT MUSIC, BEING OF ITS NATURE IMMORTAL, CAN SOMETIMES PROLONG THE LIFE OF THOSE INTIMATELY ASSOCIATED WITH IT, he said. I’VE NOTICED THAT FAMOUS COMPOSERS IN PARTICULAR HANG ON FOR A LONG TIME. DEAF AS POSTS, MOST OF THE, WHEN I COME CALLING. I EXPECT SOME GOD SOMEWHERE FIND THAT VERY AMUSING. Death contrived to look disdainful. IT’S THEIR KIND OF JOKE.*

*And of course, one that misfires. Deafness doesn’t prevent composers hearing the music. It prevents them hearing the distractions.
