I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.
Edgar Allen Poe

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
- H. L. Mencken

Many people would sooner die than think; In fact, they do so
-Bertrand Russell

What I have been telling you, from alpha to omega, what is the one great thing the sigil taught me — that everything in life is miraculous. For the sigil taught me that it rests within the power of each of us to awaken at will from a dragging nightmare of life made up of unimportant tasks and tedious useless little habits, to see life as it really is, and to rejoice in its exquisite wonderfulness. If the sigil were proved to be the top of a tomato-can, it would not alter that big fact, nor my fixed faith. No Harrowby, the common names we call things by do not matter — except to show how very dull we are ...

Hatchday

I've wasted far too much time. I'm being picked up in an hour and a half and I have to have breakfast first. So this is going to be a speedwriting birthday version of Wise Madness. In case you missed it today's my birthday. The stores are still open. Just saying.

I actually got out o the house yesterday. I got an email that I had snail mail in my PO Box and headed up to Columbus Circle to get it. I finally got my Brooklyn Botanic Garden membership package. I'm now a full-fledged member. I also got an honest to god birthday card from Carey. No not Carey, Carey. Can't you people tell my friends apart. Fine it was from Bad Carey. Now you know who I mean. Why do my friends all have the same names even unusual names like Carey? You make it very hard when I'm trying to tell a story. Don't get me started on the Katherines/Catherines/Kats/Kathys/Cathys/Caitlins/Kathryns. You waste half my time therapy time making it clear who I am talking about.

Then I was off to Harlem on a secret mission. I had to go to 125th street from Columbus Circle. Who knows why that is exciting? It's one stop on the or . That's the best express run there is and I have a choice of two trains! You might not find that exciting but it is.

Aren't you happy I got commuting in? Heather's mother is visiting and I thought I'd show her around the City but instead I got invited over to Heather's for dinner so that was my next stop. 46 minutes from Harlem to Williamsburg, not bad.

She was going to make spaghetti but as you know I'm the one person that doesn't like pasta. So she made a egg/andouille sausage dish, sort of like a quiche. It's not a quiche because I'm a real man.

What else did I want to write about? OK what is good about 57? Yes that's how old I am. 57 years ago I hatched from my spiny anteater egg. There's of course Heinz's 57 varieties. Lauren and I used to debate what it was 57 varieties of. I thought it was all their products. She thought it was pickles because it says the motto on a picture of a pickle. It actually means nothing. It was chosen because they thought it sounded good.

I am pretty sure 57 is something significant in baseball but it isn't clicking. 56 was of course the length of Joe D's hitting streak.

One nice thing is that I'm 57 and I was born in 1957. That was the dawn of the space age! Sputnik was launched.

As I keep saying I'm spending the day at the Huntington Folk Festival. Here's a list of the artists playing during the day.

Mark Allen Berube, Emma Brooke, Robert Bruey,
Mya Byrne, Brad Cole, Julie Corbalis, Karen Dahlstrom, Christine DeLeon, Honor Finnegan, Marci Geller, Craig Greenberg, Loretta Hagen, Jenai Huff, Josh Joffen, Susan Kane, Judy Kass, Libby Koch, Lisa Jane Lipkin, Alex Mallett, My Dads Truck, Matt Nakoa, Kat Quinn, Eugene Ruffolo, Paul Sachs, Dylan Sneed, Toby Tobias, Robinson Treacher, Villa Palagonia, Scott Wolfson & Other Heroes, Wool & Grant, and The YaYas.

Most of them are my friends. I'm drying in with Alex and Matt. The ones in bold played the Budgiedome or will play this year. The headliners are my girls, Bobtown. If you really want to get me a present you can donate to their Kickstarter for their new album, the History of Ghostgs. Remember if you donate $10 or more I WON'T sing Ol' Man River to you. That's a valuable premium. Now I have to run. See you at the festival.

Oh hell as today is my hatchday i have to post this.
