With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.
-Oliver Wendell Holmes

Invasion of the b-blush girl

My father started at a new dialysis center today. I'm won't be around once school starts to take him except on Fridays so I'll give my mother the day off when I can. The new place is not far from a couple of places my father took me a lot when I was a kid, Adventurer's Inn and Golf City. Adventurer's Inn was wonderful; they had an arcade inside and rides outside. I used to go there all the time. I was addicted to the baseball and shooting games. This was before video games were invented. I was a champ at the shooting games. For a gun control advocate I've always had an affinity towards guns. The one time I got to shoot a real rifle at a shooting gallery I was really good. If it wasn't for the fact that they are used to kill people I might take it up as a hobby. Golf City was the best miniature golf course in the area. There was a nice symmetry here; my father drove me there when I was a kid now I was making the same drive for him. He doesn't have as much fun when he arrives as I did though. He still isn't used to the whole thing.

After I brought him home I rushed to the train station to catch the 5:51 into the city. I only had 10 minutes to make it but the station is really close and this is the one time of day I don't have to look for parking. The closest street has no parking till 6 so I just park there. I'll take my chances for the 15 minutes I'm there illegal, they never give tickets there then.

The thing I was rushing off to see was a band as you might guess, b-blush . The lack of capitalization is intentional. The band is really Cassis and whoever is backing her up. She is a European import, I'm not sure from where, someplace Germanic, judging by her accent. They are a definite neuro-band. She plays accordion with style. The lineup tonight featured a stand up bass player and a drummer who looked like he was about 14; he could have been the youngest Hanson brother. It's hard to describe her music but you can hear some of it on her website.

She played someplace I've never been before, La Belle Epoche; it's a New Orleans style restaurant. There was supposed to be a $10 minimum. When I got there I saw all the entrees were much more than that. I just sat on a couch near the stage and no one ever asked me to order so I got out for free. The sound system was awful so I'm glad I didn't pay. I moved around a bit before I settled down looking for a place I could hear. It didn't help that there were people talking the whole time they were playing.

They played from 5:30 till 8 so I just caught the last hour. I wish I could have seen more but it was good to see them again in any event.

I'm making nice progress in LOTR. I'm up to The Muster of Rohan. I'm going to give two quotes today. The first one is one of my favorite lines. I think Pippin expresses something that we all feel occasionally.

'A pawn did Gandalf say? Perhaps; but on the wrong chessboard.

People often comment on the lack of female characters in The Hobbit. LOTR does somewhat better and Éowyn makes a nice feminist statement in it.

'All your words are to say: you are a woman and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honour, you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more…'
