With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

Batnose Convention IV

As my faithful readers know this was the Batnose Brigade Weekend. Shelly and myself went down to spend the weekend with Carey. On Saturday night we went to see Christine Lavin. Near the end of the show Christine said I was a bastard, that was the nicest anyone was to me this weekend.

To tell you the truth that is how I would have written this entry a few years ago, now it's time for a kinder gentler entry.

On Friday I woke up at 5AM so that I could be at WFUV for the members day fundraiser. Even at 6 AM there was a full compliment of volunteers, every phone was being used so I never actually took a call. I like supervising of course and it is the best use of my talents. When things aren't busy I have to remember to train people myself not to delegate that. There are some mistakes that everyone makes and when I do the training I point them out so that people won't make them. You have to be willing to have people think you are explaining things too simply. The first rule is that nothing is too simple. People can screw up anything. Now if I can only get people to ask when something unusual comes up instead of guessing.

It might sound like I'm complaining but I had lots of fun as usual. I wish I could have stayed longer. I didn't get to talk to Jim much but it was my first time talking to Lucy in a year I think. Lucy was at the concert that Christine recorded her Subway Series CD. Lucy is the one that shouts out "It's Gordon's Fault " on Sensitive New Age Guys. I found out Friday that her ex-husband owns the The Birchmere, it's a small world.

I went straight from the station to pick up my father to take him to dialysis. Then I went straight from dialysis down to Carey's. I made great time, one of the easiest trips I've had down there.

I got there a bit before Shelly arrived. Shelly arrived later than we expected and I got there earlier. Every time a car door closed we thought it was her. When we finally got around to calling her to see where she was she was in the parking lot. We had great timing.

We of course started with the ritual exchange of gifts. We then went out to dinner. We went to the Paper Moon dinner; Shelly had never been there. You have to love a place that has a huge pez dispenser collection as part of the décor. The food is good too. We resisted getting desert though since we had a full supply back at Carey's. I had brought bobka and halvah as usual, Carey bought chocolate oranges and Shelly was going to bake cookies. We stuffed ourselves and had our usual stupid conversations. The one negative was that I started feeling sick. I hope it isn't anything but a Crohn's attack; I had quite a few spasms over the weekend, not fun.

On Saturday I wasn't really feeling up to doing much till the concert. We went shopping and Shelly baked the cookies. While Shelly baked Carey and I watched an episode of Buffy, The Zeppo, that I had written about in a guest entry for Carey. I loved it for the psychology of the episode, Carey liked that Xander took his shirt off. Women have one track minds don't they?

That night we ate at Ruby Tuesday's and then went to the Gordon Center to see Christine. We were disappointed because she wasn't outside talking to people before the show so we just took our seats.

Christine asked from the stage if there were any jeopardy champs in the audience. I of course applauded. She had the house lights turned on and saw it was me. After the show someone asked me if I were a plant. I had to defend Christine's honor and tell him I'm just a big fan. Of course I went onstage for SNAG and organized the guys. Only one guy slipped and sang after the orgasm line. He was on one of the geologists. It seems that Christine has a following among in the geological community. As she said, "Geologists in the House! Represent!"

After the show we went over to talk to Christine. I had emailed her and asked her to have breakfast with us on Sunday but she couldn't make it, she was staying in City of Baltimore, the Gordon Center is right by Carey's. Shelly did give her some of the cookies she baked though so she got to taste Shell's cooking at least. As always she was great to talk to.

After the show we went back to Carey's and almost immediately went to bed, not to sleep, we talked for a long time as usual.

We woke up in the morning at about the same time and I won the race to the computer to check our email and frümessages: A symbolic victory for me as I didn't have many. We had another breakfast that couldn't be beat then Shelly was off home. I stayed a few hours longer then I had to leave for home. It was raining the entire trip but the traffic wasn't too bad. I started to write this last night but was too tired to finish it. Too bad too, I've forgotten so much that I wanted to write about. The best parts of the weekend were not things that happened but the little exchanges we had. I bet Carey and Shelly will remember them, you can read about them in their entries.

Now it's back to the real world.
