With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

A troll lives under that bridge

Once again computer problems stopped me from updating last night. I'm sure this disappointed Roy, he knows I'm going to write about him today. Last night we went to play bridge. Our usual club doesn't have a game on Tuesday night and Roy suggested that we play at game he went to once with Farley. It does have the advantage of being very convenient to where he works and I live. We had a nice dinner at a Fridays that was close by. The person running the game is as nice as can be. It is played in a church that was once a beautiful private home. The only problem is that the game that they played there can't really be called bridge. We played terribly. My guess is we through away at least five hands, probably more. The upshot is that we only won by about three percentage points. I have never played with such bad players in my life. Not even in novice games when I was just starting. Forget making deductions based on the opponents actions. All I was able to do was follow suit and believe my partner's bidding and play. That was enough to win big time.

It might seem strange complaining about a game that we won. The thing about bridge though is it is one of those things that you do just so you can get better. There are others, golf, bowling, most games without direct competition. The real opponent is your self, if you do better than you did before you are happy. That's what bridge is about. I always want to play against the strongest players who will punish me for my mistakes. That is how you learn.

The whole idea is a bit strange. You play not to win but to get better, Why do you want to get better? To win. It doesn't make sense logically but it does emotionally.

Last night whenever Roy made a mistake or our opponents did something ridiculous I told Roy that it would be fodder for this entry. That was emotionally satisfying too.
