With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

April Horvendile Inquirer

Does anyone have a hammer that I can use to hammer some sense into my students? After going over this for days students started passionately objecting to using j for the square root of negative one, instead of the more traditional i. We that because we are following the electrical engineering practice and these students are going to take electrical engineering. They spend far more energy worrying about this than in learning the subject matter. On the homework the question said, “give the answer in the form a +bj.” A student asked, “do we have to give it in the form a+bj?” I told them that they will do anything to keep themselves from thinking about the real problem is. That actually hit a chord with one person who agreed.

After class I played online till I went down to see Dave’s True Story at the Hojo Lounge. I love those gigs. I have to remember to invite some friends next time. There is no cover and I don’t know if they even have a minimum. I can’t resist getting their milkshakes.

A nice thing about seeing DTS is that it also means I’ll have social interaction as I’m friendly with them. I’ve been spending too much time alone.

I was thinking of spilling my guts here today but realized that the month is almost over and I haven’t written the April edition of the Horvendile Inquirer. So without further ado.

Horvendile Inquirer

Michael Jackson’s Monkeys appear before 9/11 inquiry: While the fact that President Bush has insisted that VP Cheney appears with him before the 9/11 commission is well known, it was only discovered yesterday that he also insisted on the presence of Michael Jackson’s monkeys. No explanation was given.

Life on Mars: The Mars Rover, Spirit, has made a remarkable discovery. In a cave it found the mummified remains of what appeared to be a gorilla in a diving helmet. Next to the mummy was a machine that produced bubbles. Experts are baffled. Michael Jackson’s monkeys are going to be consulted.

New Glitch in Computer Voting: California's secretary of state, Kevin Shelley announced the discovery of a new problem in the Diebold computer voting software; If someone casts a vote for a candidate who shares a first or last name with any of the Beatles the software converts it into a vote for ex-Beatle Pete Best. Mr. Shelley said that despite the fact that the state would be far better off with Mr. Best in office he cannot approve of the software. Michael Jackson’s monkeys are now searching for other glitches in the program.

New Memorial Proposed in Washington: The World War II memorial has been completed in Washington and a new monument has been proposed by the Bush administration, this one to the 1938 War of the Worlds. When reporters mentioned that the war was simply a Hoax by Orson Welles based on H.G. Wells’s novel of the same name an administration official replied, “The insistence of the press in undermining the country’s faith in its intelligence services is aiding the terrorist and all enemies of America. The war was just as real as Iraq’s weapons of mass destructions.” Design for the memorial is being left to Michael Jackson’s monkeys.

New Tax: The senate voted to extend a ban on taxing the internet but agreed to make a move in that directions. Starting January 1, 2005 all messages sent by drum will be taxed at a rate of 0.3¢ per drum beat. The figure was reached by a blue ribbon commission lead by Michael Jackson’s monkeys.
