With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

An Appel for the teacher

OK here’s the problem I have a lot to write about but I’m very tired. If I don’t update now I might not get a chance till tomorrow night? What should I do? I guess I’ll give the short version tonight and if I get a chance fill in the details. Knowing me I won’t remember them.

Last night I met Roy at his office and we went for our annual trip to the driving range. I sucked. I didn’t hit the ball well till the last few shots. Roy did better which is good since he is preparing for his annual best ball tournament at work. That’s the reason we played.

After that we played in the Worldwide Bridge Tournament. People around the world play the same hands we did and compete against each other. We didn’t do well enough to hit the worldwide overalls but we did score at the club. We earned about 1.1 points. Not bad.

I spent all day today at the Appel Farm Arts and Music Festival with Lori. We were sitting in the rain most of the day but still had a great time. We saw Stargazer Lily, The Kennedys, Erin McKeown, Los Lonely Boys, Shawn Colvin, and Jonatha Brooke. Los Lonely Boys were the musical discovery of the day. Think along the lines of Santana. There was no pretense of folk, they are hard rockers. Their musicianship and showmanship were superb. They are on my most see again list.

I rally can’t call it a folk festival, I guess Shawn Colvin comes the closest to a traditional folk singer/songwriter. The Kennedys were the usual delightful selves and were assisted by the beautiful and talented Shelly with their merch. Lori and I were the only ones that stood during stand but that at least earned an smile from Maura.

Lori and I decided to not stay for Ani DiFranco, it was wet, cold and we didn’t’ feel up to her fans. So instead we went to the Elmer Diner and had a lovely, warm, and cozy, breakfast during the dinner hour.

That wasn’t a bad recap of the day. It was a great one.
