With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
-Steven Weinberg

The good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.
-Bertrand Russell

Too much sanity may be madness and the maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it should be.
-Miguel de Cervantes

I enjoy paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.

We're on the Aoife Destruction

I meant to post this last night but couldn’t. So just change every “today” into a “yesterday”

I didn’t give any hint to what I was up to today, did I? I broke my usual format, I usually tell you what’s coming up. So now you are in like total suspense, right? Did I go to the moon? Did I have an orgy with a WNBA team? Did I sit around and vegetate? Did I have a meeting with the G-8 leaders? Did I go to a concert? OK, before you read any further vote on which of those choices is right. And the winner is…

I went to a concert, Crooked Still. They were playing in Ridgefield CT part of the CHIRP series. Ridgefield is a quite well to do town in Connecticut that uses a decent portion of its wealth to promote folk music. In addition to the summer Chirp series, there is a winter series plus another series at the library. Years ago Carey and I saw The Kennedys there.

I discovered Crooked Still at FRFF last year and have wanted to see them again, this was my first opportunity. I met Jessica at the show. She is a friend of Paul’s that I had met briefly a couple of times. I recently got to know her through the Richard Thompson community on LJ. She responded to my posts about last weeks shows. I looked at her profile and saw that we have quite a few friends and interests in common. She mentioned in her LJ that she was going to the show and I told her to look out for me. I am of course easy to find as I’m right down front.

I was soon joined by Jessica, her friends, and her friend’s dog, Zoe. Notice who’s name I remembered? OK I actually remembered Jeff and Vivian too and they are people. Zoe ended up stealing the show and Crooked Still dedicated a song to her.

I liked Crooked still even better than at FRFF. That isn’t surprising as I had a much better seat for a much longer show. I got to talk to Aoife during the break. I’d write her name out phonetically but she told me she hates that. Let me see how I can do this. Aoife rhymes with the first two syllables of Beefaroni. I believe it is the Irish version of Eve.

I was not surprised to discover that they are friends with the Mammals. Like them they are a young group that does traditional folk. They don’t use the most traditional instrumentation. On most songs there is a banjo, cello, and double bass. They add a guitar on a few of them. Their sound blends beautifully with Aoife’s vocals. They are now on my don’t miss list.

Not a bad night, I met a new friend that I sort of knew before, saw a new band that I sort of knew before, and heard lots of old songs, most of which I sort of knew before.

Oh yes, one more thing, remember the multiple choice question about what I did today? I actually did two of those things, I’m not telling which one, only that it wasn’t vegetate.

Errata: Yesterday I said I was listening to the Kennedy’s album No Angel Knows. I meant to say, Angel Fire. No Angel Knows, is a Slaid Cleaves Album.
