With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.
2002-10-10 - 5:11 p.m. I was really lazy and didn’t update this morning. I’ll try to squeeze writing it in before class now. That’s more important that planning my lesson, right? Yesterday someone at school said to me. “This big guy just pushed his way onto the elevator. It was terrible. He wasn’t even black.” I’m mad at myself for not responding. The person who said this is a really nice. That doesn’t make what he said less hateful. He might have even listened to me. You can’t let things like that go unchallenged. That’s how they become habitual ways of talking and thinking. Now the question is, do I bring it after the fact? If I see him today I think I will. My class really got on my nerves last night. I give them a 15 minute break and tell them that I expect them to be back in their seats and ready to start then. Instead half the class came walking in after 20 minutes. I told them I’m going to only give 10 minute breaks for now on since we can’t afford to lose more than 15 minutes. If they are good about the 10 minute break I’ll go back to the 15 minute break. Some of the students don’t know that they are in college. They think they are still in high school. One student asked me if I’m going to give them the formulae on the test. (OK he actually said “formulas.”) When I told him no, he complained. I’ve been telling them from day one that they have to memorize the formulae. He apparently hasn’t. We only had 15 minutes left after the homework. I spent extra time on it because we have a test next week. When I started teaching something new a student asked if we could review for the test instead. We had just spent over 2 hours reviewing. The class only meets once a week and the student complained that I was going to spend 15 minutes doing something new. I explained that we needed to finish the syllabus during the semester and we needed all the time available, that we were actually behind. She still complained. I lost it at that point and told them that class was over. If they didn’t want to learn I wouldn’t force them to. I shouldn’t have done that. I’m feeling stressed but I should keep control of myself in class. There aren’t a lot of things that I’m really good at that I get to do on a regular basis. Teaching is one of them. I should do the best job I can. After class I tried to call Stacey but got her voicemail. Then I called Carey. After that I went down to the Living Room to see the Professor and Maryann. Within seconds of my arrival Lisa got there. We talked outside a bit before going in and I said hi to Ken Rockwood aka the Professor. I haven’t seen them in quite some time. I used to see them at least once every couple of months. Most of the songs they did were new, I had never heard them before. They performed with a band, which I usually don’t like. The last time I saw them with a band the band totally drowned out their singing. This time they didn’t but the sound system was muddy. Their strong points are the lyrics and the quality of their voices. The show was still fun but I hope the sound system is better next time. I almost forgot the big news of the day. I found out that DVN shows at the point were sold out on ticketweb. I then realized that I hadn’t spoken to Lori about the show. I gave her a call and found out that neither had anybody else. We just assumed that Lori would be there. The upshot was that the wonderful Lori was able to run over to the Point and get us the tickets. That means that tomorrow I get to play with Carey, Joy, Nitsa, and Lori. DVN will think I have a harem. They’ll all be jealous. Well all of them but Skippy.
